Shabbir, H. A., Hyman, M. R., Reast, J., & Palihawadana, D. (2013). Deconstructing Subtle Racist Imagery in Television Ads. J Bus Ethics Journal of Business Ethics, 123(3), 421-436. doi:10.1007/s10551-013-1798-8 The authors of this article argue that other experiments that have been performed to determine if subtle racism has taken the place of open racism in advertisements are not effective since the tests are not able to determine the difference between racial and non-racial characteristics. The authors argue that the best way to see if an advertisement implements racism in a subtle or blunt way is to use the dimensional qualitative research method (DQR). The commotions that this picture has created only speaks to the lack of advisement that displays this specific demographic of families. Thus, I would have to say, this is not a common occurrence, and Old Navy’s initiative has resonated with some families as evidenced by some of the comments of appreciation from some of the families that feel represented by this ad.
