Though John is the novel's narrator, conversely, most of the narrative focus is on Owen, who Reilly believes is a symbol of Christ. Moreover, Owen shapes the lives of those around him in a Christ-like manner and even his dialogue – written in all capitals– is a reference to Jesus, inspired by the New Testament where Christ’s remarks appear in red text. Furthermore, if a thesis discussing faith, and specifically Owen’s role in it, is selected, one can analyze Reilly’s takes on religion in the novel either in agreement or denial of his claims.
