The study conducts a telephone survey in order to figure out the differences of social media usage among various generation cohorts. Two generations, millennial and baby boomer, are inquired through an online questionnaire to compare generational difference in motives of using social networking sites. The research especially looks into the impact of collective self-esteem and group identification on the incentives. The results demonstrate that Baby Boomer show lower collective self-pride and SNS use for social compensation than Millennial. And the various aims of people with different levels of collective self-esteem and group identity are also discussed.

The study points out that social media become a tool for older people to keep social contact with others. And it explains older adults’ attitudes and motives of social networking sites usage. Moreover, it proposes the feasible medical use of social media and some potential negative influences of social media amongst older adults.
The article is peer reviewed and published in 2013. It is a current article for my research. Nevertheless, the article does not define the age range of older adults, so the scope of the article is questionable. But some conclusions are correlated with those articles discussing Baby Boomers.
The article is related to my research topic, but as the scope is vague, it cannot be directly used in my research. However, the article demonstrates the attitudes and motives of social media, which is relevant to the researches done by Leung (2013) and Barker (2012).
