The story was mainly about Guy Montag who burned books for a living. Montag and his wife, Mildred, have a mixed relationship. They don’t agree on anything and never communicate. They are entirely different from one another because of the influence of society.
Montag was having what he thought to be a great life, until he met Clarisse McClellan. Clarisse is their seventeen-year-old next door neighbor who was raised to ask why and how. When she meets Montag, she changes him by making him think about things he never gave thought to before. Clarisse inquires to Montag if he is truly happy with his life. After this, Montag learns to be more open-minded throughout the rest of of the story. When he first meets Clarisse she states, “ Strange I heard once that along time ago, houses used to burn by accident and they needed firemen to stop the flames.” At first, Guy does not believe her, but later on after she dies/disappears, he then realizes that it is true. Guy also learns that even though he did something against the law, it was still the right thing to do and when he thought about Clarisse’s question, he realized that he really wasn’t happy. Montag finds out everything in his life was false and that he couldn’t trust anyone, so he worked to improve his relationship with his wife. As Americans, we have become use to the privilege of free speech and democracy. The idea that if you want to achieve something or create something you simply have to do. A society such as the one described would invoke loss of creativity, loss of freedom or expression. No longer would the days exists in which one could have simple freedoms of thought. This restriction on human creativity would use up a multitude of resources making sure nobody was being creative because their free will and thought could potentially pose a threat to the government. This would make innovation so much harder. There would be also be an increase in the use of resources to help with the formation and maintenance of spying so that the government would become all-seeing.
