Whose relationship is it? May-December Love: An Annotated Bibliography
Tentative Thesis: Regardless of their personal beliefs and ideologies, people should not challenge the quality of May-December relationships because many age-gap couples experience healthy partnerships, an array of stimulating generational differences, and an average level of satisfaction in their relationship along with an average level of insecure emotional attachment to their partners compared to age-similar couples.

This article also inspects the characteristics involved in age-dissimilar mortality rates, such as household size, relationship quality, education, and financial circumstances. The article findings support my argument regarding overall relationship health by concluding that the chance of dying decreases for men as the age gap increases when his spouse is younger in the same way that the chance of dying decreases for women as the age gap increases when her spouse is older. On the other hand, this journal article opposes my argument as well by concluding the opposite when the male is younger and the female is older. Drefahl’s article provides argument with background concerning general beliefs about why people choose to involve themselves in age-gap relationships and statistical information about individual longevity in age-gap relationships. This piece supports my anticipation by discovering that having a younger spouse can be detrimental for women. The results support my refutation because it proves that age-dissimilar relationships can be as healthy, if not healthier than similarly aged relationships regardless of their socioeconomic …show more content…
Knox addresses five themes that affect age-gap relationships: “age-discrepant relationships are happy, age-discrepant relationships lack social approval and support, age-discrepant relationship are not without problems, woman perceive benefits of involvement with older partners, and friends of the couple are joint friends” (Knox, 1997). This article supports my argument that many people can be involved in healthy, stimulating age-gap relationships. This source provides me with background characteristics, credibility, and statistical evidence of various persons involved in such relationships. Supporting my refutation, this article concludes that only four percent of students and faculty report being unhappy in their

Since the 1960s, marriage rates have been rapidly decreasing, and marriage rates have fallen faster for some groups more than others. Regarding racial-ethnic groups, African Americans are “experiencing a more rapid and pronounced decline in marriage rate than any other group” (Cohen 2015:262). Another trend regarding marriage is that people are getting married later in life than ever before. Statistics show that “in the 1950s, the average American woman got married…

Response to “Love, Actually” Andrew Reiner writer of, “Love, Actually” expresses the epidemic of a larger percent of millennials, that are facing the trends and fear of being in a committed relationship as a result, millennials’ mind set has shifted less empathy and increase on self-esteem and narcissism. Millennials’ fears toward vulnerability might keep them from reaching a marriage later on in their lives and the knowledge of love. Even though, they might not consider the importance of the healing power of love and intimacy, that cannot be found anywhere just in learning how to love. Reiner is accurate in his observation that hooking up and hanging out have both led to a generation that fears vulnerability because is affecting relationship, this…

The perception of marriage has changed drastically since the beginning of the 1900s to present day. A significant amount of this can be attributed to the experiences and events faced in each generation. As authors Neil Howe and William Strauss explore in their study, “The Next 20 Years: How Customer and Workforce Attitudes Will Evolve” insight into how each generation has influenced the other with its new developments of values and perceptions is provided, thus ultimately giving reason to why marriage is conceptualized the way it is today. The GI Generation arrived after the Great Awakening in the nineteenth century, where they faced hardships of war and depression, yet managed in midlife to “built up the postwar affluent society,” creating…

Levy and Jamie L. Macdonald, they explain how Robert N. Butler who was the first Director of the National Institute on Aging defines ageism as only a negative aspect. He states that ageism is the prejudiced attitude by one age group to another, he establishes that younger people just see aging as a process of becoming “powerless” and “useless.” What Sheri R. Levy and Jamie L. Macdonald are trying to accomplish in this article is to give ageism a more positive focus. In 2005 Todd Nelson Editor of Journal of Social Issues made a claim that insinuated that people do not necessarily focus on ageism because of how it is portrayed in the media, and the common belief that getting old can only bring negative aspects into your life (Levy, Macdonald). According to the authors ageism in the workplace continues to be a huge issue, including negative environment, less accessibility to salary increase and promotions, force early retirement and discrimination when it comes to hiring an older…

This is a controversial finding, since other studies have found opposite trends where more women than men have higher prevalence of successful aging. The results regarding the relation between age and level of education with successful aging are more consistent in the sense that as age increases, the percentage of people with successful aging decreases, while higher education prevalence of successful aging among the population increases significantly. “The median age at first marriage in the early 1970s, when the baby boomers were young, was 21 for women and 23 for men; by 2009 it had climbed to 26 for women and 28 for men, five years in a little more than a generation.” (Henig) People used to get married in their late teens or early twenties. My grandmother, for example got married at 18, my mom at 23. In today’s society, people aren’t getting married until their late twenties, or early thirties. My two eldest brothers are 24 and neither of them are even looking for a serious relationship yet.…

Introduction The family as a primary source of social support is very important in promoting active and healthy aging. Increased life expectancy may create multigenerational kinship networks to provide family continuity and emotional support when needed. These multigenerational families are characterized by cross-generational reciprocity and interdependence – grandparents and grandchildren sharing over three decades of life and bond (Hooyman & Kiyak, p.345). Grandparenting is an evolving role affected by social changes such as “women in labour force, distance, divorce, remarriage, reconstituted families and international adoption that have seriously altered the classic family structure and the challenges of grandparenting” (NACA, 2005. p1).…

Older Adulthood usually know what they want in life while emerging adults are at that in between stage in their life. Age may not play a factor when it comes to men seeking male mates and these are things that need to be taken into consideration. In terms of my reaction to Sohn’s findings, I was not surprised that taking away the freedom for a bride to agree to a marriage would result in older males marrying younger females. This is because female bodies are more fertile at a younger age, meaning that they have more time to produce offspring. Not only this, but younger women typically have more in shape bodies and don’t have as many things wrong with them as older women do. However, it is truly sickening to see the…

Stereotypes defining the older generations as“senile, slow, unproductive, frail, and unable to ‘learn new tricks’” make finding jobs harder for those who are in their forties or older (Rothenberg and Gardner 11). Although these stereotypes may be accurate in some cases, they do not apply to all, employers need to consider everything the employee has to offer before passing them up. The unemployment rate of those over forty equals two times the number of those younger than forty (Leonhardt). The fact that there are more people over forty unemployed than, proves that age discrimination can cause major issues. For example, Texas Roadhouse has been issued a number of age discrimination when hiring the front of the house employees.…
