Annie Warburton Goodrich: Women In Nursing

I. I read about many women this summer, but Annie Warburton Goodrich left a large imprint on me. Annie Warburton Goodrich paved the path for twenty-first century nurses to be run through the rigorous and rewarding courses they are put through today. Being a nursing major myself, I aspire to leave such a legacy behind. From early on in her times as a nurse, Annie Goodrich noticed flaws in the procedures and immediately began composing ways to change her field. In 1900, as the Superintendent of Nurses at Saint Luke’s Hospital, Annie began implementing her changes to nursing. The specialized fields in nursing today are credited to her changing it from a specific task to be carried out for all patients to all tasks for a smaller group of patients. Goodrich did not just focus her attention on the hospital aspect of nursing but she also focused on the education portion. Before she pioneered nursing education, it was minimal lectures during the student’s time off from their twelve hour shifts, with the entire education process lasting two years. In my life I know of many women who personally have influenced me in one way or another. The types of influences these women have had on me vary in all ways imaginable, some have been blessings and other have been curses. Out of all of these women I have encountered I have picked my mom as my influential woman to discuss. In the eyes of society, she has not achieved much but in my eyes she has conquered the world and knocked down every hurdle and force in her path. She was never fortunate enough to have a support system to push her to continue her education. When my mom was young, it was socially acceptable to not attend college, but in today’s world a degree is essential to succeed. As a single mom she sacrificed so much for my sisters and me to be our best. I found a growing desire in myself to display many of her characteristics in my daily life. My mother is my woman of
