Anne's Happiness Analysis

Decent Essays
While in hiding, there was a period where Anne spent a portion of her days feeling rather sad and bored. She spent a lot of her time sleeping and writing about the things she missed. Almost a year later not only did Anne mature but she also seemed overall much more joyous. "Then I think about "the good" of going into hiding, of my health, and with my whole being of the "dearness" of Peter, of that which is still embryonic and impressionable. I don't think then of all the misery, but of the beauty that still remains." (Page #170-171) What things do you think contributed to improving Annes happiness? Do you think that it is just a passing phase or do you think that it will

What Anne is explaining in her diary is what she has been doing in her hard life as a Jew, she somehow always is finding the good. “ Every time I write to you something special seems to have happened, but they are more often unpleasant than pleasant things” (Frank 108) This is an example of Anne’s writing changing subjects,…

Not understanding her mother’s wishes, Anne mistakes her mother’s intensions. Rather than thinking of her family’s safety, Anne selfishly thinks of herself. “I was so damn mad after her letter, I felt like taking the NAACP convention to Centreville” (Moody 284). She acted like the typical defiant teenager, or a three-year-old, deliberately disobeying her parents. Moody thought that her mother’s reason to keep her in the house when she returned home was because Moody did not come home often; and so her mother wanted to spend as much time with her.…

Ron Carlson’s short story “Happiness” is, in my opinion, the most worthless reading we’ve examined over the past semester in Modern World Fiction. This short story contributed nothing to the class’s greater understanding of modern fiction and was seemingly devoid of any significant morals. The story itself describes an elderly man’s weekend cabin retreat with his brother and two sons. Throughout the course of this retreat the main character experiences a number of reminiscent flashbacks intertwined with activities he is experiencing as the story is narrated. Carlson’s supporters argue that his formulaic story formation develops relatable characters and a meaningful moral; “Happiness”, though, is marked by its deviation from this conventional…

During this section, Anne again describes how she feels like she is being treated like a child. She tries to find new ways to cope with matters, and she decides that it is best she stops writing for a bit. Although Anne finds it rather offensive when the people of the annex talk about what they would like to do when the war is over, she records what each person would like personally after escaping their temporary home. One of Anne’s new ways of acting more like an adult is keeping her opinions to herself at the dinner table. She describes how the familiar sounds of the clock have stopped ringing and explains how it has been taken down.…

Communication Journal: The Science of Happiness Steven Parton’s article, “The Science of Happiness: Why Complaining is Literary Killing You”, attempts to explain how our brains are influenced by our view of situations and the attitudes of the people around us. To a great extent, Parton’s argument is logical and practical and presents some useful lessons not only about how to enhance our well-being, but also how to communicate appropriately particularly in the world of business. The important and practical aspect about the article is that the attitudes we surround ourselves with reshape our brain. Attitudes associated with pessimism, melancholy, regret, fear, and depression among other emotional elements tend to have adverse effects on our…

Although happiness is key to living a long, healthy life, people should not be happy 100 percent of the time. Eric Wilson argued in his article, Against Happiness, that only by experiencing sadness can people experience the fullness of the human condition (Wilson 456). Many artistic geniuses such as Vincent van Gogh, Emily Dickenson, Charles Schulz, and Woody Allen have all experienced life through a dark glass. Studies show that “when you are in a negative mood, you become more analytical, more critical, and more innovative,” (Diener 456). Negative emotions, such as sadness, have a purpose; to direct human thinking.…

The way happiness is achieved has changed throughout history. Americans should not pursue happiness as a way of life but should allow happiness to come naturally. When it comes to being happy, it coming naturally is the way to go. John Mill states that be focusing on an “object other than happiness” is the only way to be happy. This means that to achieve happiness, you need to focus more on the path rather than the destination.…

In the article, “Happiness and Eudaimonia”, the text tackles one of the most fundamental questions that virtually everyone in this universe has grappled with, what defines a happy life, versus a good life? (Happiness and Eudaimonia). However, the true meaning of “a happy life” cannot be precisely determined, for it usually means different things to different people at different points in their lives. Personally, for example, I think that I have a “happy life” at the time’s when I finally get to crack open the spine of a new book. Yet, in my opinion, the very concept of happiness is more of a surface level feeling that can alter at the drop of a dime.…
