Irish-American author Anne Rice, best known for her Gothic style of literature and her series “The Vampire Chronicles”, was born Howard Allen Frances O'Brien; October 4, 1941 in New Orleans, La.. Predominately writing horror, Anne Rice has also used the pen names Anne Rampling, and A. N. Roquelaure. Anne Rice’s stories of Vampires have won her acclaim with readers, been made into movies, adapted as a musical for the stage, and soon may become a television series that will bring her characters back to life once again. Using her own life experiences as a catalyst for her books, Rice has entertained for years with her tales of the macabre and will continue to entertain for years to come.

Their first child, a daughter named Michelle, was born in 1966. Michelle diagnosed with leukemia at the age of six, died two years later. As a distraught mother, Rice sought solace in writing. She wrote her first novel in just five weeks. The story included a Michelle like child who gains eternal life when she becomes a vampire. The first book of “The Vampire Chronicles” series, a book titled “Interview with a Vampire”, was a huge success. However, Rice’s depression was severe causing her to drink heavily. Two years later, Rice gave birth to a second child, a son she named Christopher. This child’s birth marked a new beginning for Rice and it was at this time she also decided to give up drinking. Now, having the much-needed motivation to move on with her life, Rice resumed writing with renewed passion. Then, after living in San Francisco for 25 years, the Rice moved into a home in the garden district of New Orleans. This new location became the setting for her series “Lives of the Mayfair Witches”. The titles include “The Witching Hour”, “Lasher”, and “Taltos”. As well as writing horror, Rice has also written other genres, such as historical and erotic fiction. Many of these books have been published under pseudonyms A. N. Roquelaure (meaning cloak) and Anne Rampling as well. Rice lived in her New Orleans home until the death of her husband in 2002.
