In my view, for a book to be labeled as ´classical literature,´ it needs to be timeless. Classic books should be something adults can relate to and children can learn from. These books should have essential lessons that can be applied to any time period, even our currents one, and should be able to pertain with people from all walks of life. It also has to have a little bit of everything: romance, drama, adventure, and mystery. One book I definitely believe has rightfully earned its title as a piece of ´classical literature´ is Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Of all the occurrences in which she had to forgive someone, the most significant moment was when she had finally got the nerve to forgive Gilbert Blythe after five years. All of this started because Gilbert was teasing her about her hair and after that day, she swore she would never forgive him, even if he had helped her many times and begged for her forgiveness. Five years later, Anne finally realized that her forgiveness was long overdue after her mother spoke to her about how she made the same mistake as Anne, and everyday “[she] always wished [she’d] forgiven him [John Blythe] when [she] had the chance” (Montgomery, 138). Anne eventually forgives Gilbert and they become real close friends. Through her practice of pardoning people, Anne sets an example for all generations that forgiving others can be really a necessity in life.
Nevertheless, Anne’s capability to relate with people of all ages and all backgrounds makes Anne of Green Gables the special book it is. With her lessons on making mistakes, forgiveness, and much more, Anne is sure to always remain in in the hearts of generations to come. The books that are remembered for centuries and really impact our lives deserve the most honorable title of ‘classical literature’ and that belongs to Anne of Green
