Anne Lamott's Shitty First Draft

Improved Essays
There are different types of a paper that could be written. However, revising and editing of any serious papers, such as scientific research report or an essay is not only highly recommended, but required. In the beginning, with very little exceptions, most of the texts are written in the rough draft form. Consequently, the passage “Shitty First Drafts” written by Anne Lamott provides reasoning why the rough drafts are so important and proposes different solutions to perform the efficient job. Firstly, author points out that even high-quality writer starts with the not perfect draft, and the effort to make a deep, grammatically correct, interesting text on a second or third attempt. A variation of the methods which supposed to help the reader in constructing a general article or an essay is …show more content…
Additionally, parts, about the useful skills of revising the first draft, such as editing a paper with a colored pen and re-writing new, edited version again, could be found interesting , as well as challenging for the audience, who may struggle with the proper construction of sentences and choosing the adequate vocabulary words overall. Relating to my own experience, writing was not the easiest experience. As an example writing an essay, usually involved the variety of the considerations and testing before putting as the fully completed assignment. While evaluating the process of the revising, adding and editing appropriate elements to my essays, it involved major researches on the topic, definitions of the vocabulary words, including standardized grammar rules and the stylistic of the passage depending on the rubric, which needed to be written about. Similarly to the math problems, major part of the calculations is usually performed on the scratch paper before transforming the final answer to the test booklet. “Revising” In Joseph Harris’s article, “Revising”, Harris emphasizes the differences between drafting, revising, and editing, and the impact that each of these elements has on drafting a well-written paper. Harris dubbs the first step “drafting”, or formulating the content of the paper. Drafting involves the development of ideas into a larger body of text that can be easily followed. The next step in this process is “revising”, or further developing and adjusting the current body of text. Harris reaffirms that revising is not simply editing for spelling in grammar, but rather revising focuses on building upon the text that is already developed.…

Lamott introduces Shitty First Drafts by explaining her primary argument that terrible first drafts are an essential element to writing. Lamott uses a couple of strategies to reinforce her claim, including enshrouding one of the counter arguments with negative connotation. By stating “all right, one of them does, but we do not like her very much.” (528, Writing About Writing, Shitty First Drafts) about a writer who doesn't follow her method, Lamott is encouraging the reader to not be that person that “we do not like very much”, the “we” meaning Lamott and other writers, who goes against the consensus, as in this case following a drafting method other than that of Lamott. Regarding the word choice of the general 'we' verses the personal 'I',…

In Anne Lamott's "Shitty First Drafts", Anne talks about writing being something that is not rapturous and the only way she is able to actually produce something is by writing real shitty first drafts. In her drafts, she tries being descriptive and elaborative with her ideas and thoughts. They often end up being long, stupefying and, muddled up, but seem to have an overall good effect on her product. I really liked her quote on first drafts, "You need to start somewhere" and I completely agree with that; you need to take in a leap anyways. Unless we are willing to make the first effort and actually believe in what we're writing, it gets difficult to produce something vibrant, eloquent and, explanatory to the readers.…

Rhetorically speaking, the title of Shitty First Drafts is a very eye catching title that stands out in a book complete with other mundane titles such as The Composing Process of Unskilled College Writers. The title Shitty First Drafts immediately catches the interest of the reader who then is drawn further into the article by the effective hook “Now practically even better news than that of short assignments is the idea of shitty first drafts.” (528, Writing About Writing, Shitty First Drafts). This hook implies to the reader that the subsequent article will cover a topic that they will enjoy and will include, compared to the average article on the subject of writing, offbeat humor, as displayed by the word choice of 'shitty' instead of a more professional, mundane word such as 'awful', 'terrible', or even worse 'bad'. Furthermore, Lamott limits the length of the…

Most writers experience the fear of first draft at some point in their career, or maybe even all the time. Anne Lamott simply states to relax and to begin writing, “Just get it all down on paper, because there may be something great in those six crazy pages” (222). Similarly, no matter what comes to mind; whether it exhibits good or bad qualities, something amazing maybe lurking in the gibberish that is the first…

"Shitty First Drafts," by Anne Lamott dismisses the myth of the “perfect first draft” by explaining how horrible first drafts really are. It seems that she is writing to a young, student-based audience. Lamott mixes in a lot of humor which makes it fun and interesting to read and since she writes in a very informal tone it helps her connect to the reader more than if she wrote more professionally. Along with this Lamott seems to be trying to see through the audience’s eyes by telling her personal story about writing restaurant reviews for magazines.…

In "The Maker's Eye: Reviewing your own Manuscript" by Donald M. Murray, managed to capture what happens in any review process. He emphasizes the importance of rereading and then rewriting his work until it is at its peak; Above all, Murray says that the first draft is nothing more than a sketch. I think the purpose of this essay is to inform both students and professional writers about the importance of personal review because no one is more critical than the creator. This ongoing process can be used by writers of all ages and it is critical that aspiring writers understand how long a particular job can last to complete.…

Contrary to Tompkins (2012) theory that explains children can be writers at the same time they are learning to read if not sooner; when children are able to develop the interrelation of purpose, audience they can write about those experiences while learning standard spelling usage, capitalization, and punctuation. The writing process has five features with subsections lead the writer through the complete process of producing a paper ready for publishing. When I compare my writing preparation I find that most times it falls into prewriting = 1st draft, revising = 2nd draft, final round of revising for grammar/punctuation errors, and the paper is ready for submission. Tompkins (2012) outlines the constructive process of writing with the key features; prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.…

Completing assessment one has helped me to develop more knowledge and skills such as formal writing style, language use, systemic rules and grammatical structure. As per Grellier and Goerke (2014) proofreading and editing helps writers to clearly understand the perception of the essay. Weekly readings, collaborations and blackboard activities have all helped me to improve my proofreading skills to identify grammatical and spelling errors in my essay. Additionally, using various grammar programs before submitting my essay will help to reduce grammar and spelling errors. Therefore, my writing structure, spelling and grammar use will continue to develop and improve.…

This quarter my goal is to be able to revise an essay efficiently and effectively while following a concrete plan that provides the materials to compose an essay to the best of my abilities. To complete this goal, I have devised a plan based upon recommended steps to improve the process of one's writing in Hjortshoj’s The Transition of College Writing. He explains that writers often undergo ‘’phases of planning, revising, and editing ‘’that ‘’ are therefore interwoven with composing a draft’’ (Hjortshoj 61) unlike the strict linear pattern one might learn and use in high school. To avoid advocating this linear pattern and improve how I revise my writing, I have composed a schedule of how I should complete a writing assignment or essay.…

If I was writing a paper that required a specific number of paragraphs or pages I would typically plan my paper using the four square method. If I was writing an important paper I would write a rough draft, then as I was typing it I would revise it and fix any mistakes I found. One thing that remained consistent in my writing process, no matter the type of paper, is after I wrote the paper I would try to find more grade level appropriate words instead of the simple words I originally used. While writing essays for this class I came to find it is better to combine my writing processes to write the best possible essay I could. I found the best steps for me to take in writing my paper are to write my ideas down in some form.…
