“Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere.” Anne Lamott

The article has a lot of enthusiasm. Basically this article portrays on how different writers like to start their paper. Early mornings can be rough, along with the stretching out of bed, bad breath, and most importantly smelly armpits. The article “Shitty First Drafts” has inspirations to it. I love the way Anne Lamott was just so honest with me, and didn’t care how she wrote. It was all in her head. I most definitely appreciate the descriptions that she gave in the article about one writer that she knows “It not like you don’t have a choice, because you do you can either type, or kill yourself.” Doesn’t that sentence just bring humor to

In the excerpt “Shitty First Drafts” (1994), Anne Lamott, a professional writer and author of several food reviews, explains that no good author “sits down routinely feeling wildly enthusiastic and confident. Not one of them writes elegant first drafts.” Lamott supports her explanation by illustrating to the audience “panic [that] would set in” as she attempted to write a first draft, and by informing the reader how to quiet the voices in their head so they can write their heart out. The author’s purpose is to instill in the readers and future authors that no one can write a perfect piece in one try, rather it is a process that can take as many as three drafts. Lamott writes in a somewhat humorous tone, evident in “All right, one of them does,…

Lamott introduces Shitty First Drafts by explaining her primary argument that terrible first drafts are an essential element to writing. Lamott uses a couple of strategies to reinforce her claim, including enshrouding one of the counter arguments with negative connotation. By stating “all right, one of them does, but we do not like her very much.” (528, Writing About Writing, Shitty First Drafts) about a writer who doesn't follow her method, Lamott is encouraging the reader to not be that person that “we do not like very much”, the “we” meaning Lamott and other writers, who goes against the consensus, as in this case following a drafting method other than that of Lamott. Regarding the word choice of the general 'we' verses the personal 'I',…

“Shitty First Drafts” by Lammott explains the importance of getting all of your ideas on the paper in the first draft. First, she states you need to be able to tune everyone and everything out, and write on the paper what occupies your mind about that topic. You need to incorporate all of your ideas on the paper, because you may have one good idea that will lead you onto your second draft. Throughout your drafts in the writing process, your work will continue to get better. Your first draft will more than likely always be shitty, for no one else will see it.…

In my opinion, whoever said that the process of writing was fun and creative was delusional. I find writing to be incredibly daunting and as painful as the sound of fingernails scraping a chalkboard. Reason being, I never learned that one should begin a paper by writing a “Shitty First Draft.” In the past, I would practice getting it right the first time around without any direction or sense of organization. However, after reading Anne Lamott’s article about “Shitty First Drafts,” I’m thankful I am not alone in my quest to write the perfect piece all at once.…

In what I have written I have only attempted to interpret the deepest layer of impulses in the mind of the creative writer (BOOK). As a result of Freud’s theories, the unconscious desires embedded within an individual’s mind can contribute to artistic expressions such as literature. Barbara Kingsolver, author of The Poisonwood Bible, utilizes this type of coping mechanism of artistic expression to consider various interpretations of her unconscious desires stemming from her childhood.…

Alain de Botton once said, “The chief aim of humorists is not merely to entertain, but to convey the impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly.” This quote shows that there is more to writing than just to entertain. Through writing, writers often convey messages that are not easily spoken about, such as criticizing a global trend or idea, by lightening up the topic and underlying messages through the usage of satire and humor. Joshua Ferris uses humor and satire to indirectly share his criticism on social conformity of people in an office and the American Dream.…

    1) When Anne Lamott says "I would eventually let myself trust the process--sort of, more or less." the "more or less" part is included in her words because as she mentions in her first few paragraphs neither she or any of her friends that write for a living (besides that one friend we all have) feel confident or joyous when the task of writing something shows up in life. It does not matter if you have been writing for decades as Lamott has, you will always feel uncomfortable when you have to start an assigned piece of writing. She has followed the same procedure for years and that is why she "almost" trusts the process as she states. Her track record goes to show why the process ultimately works.…

The overall thesis of Lamott’s essay was about the drafting process, or more specifically the process of writing a first draft. She also talked about how most first drafts are not perfect, as well as the fact that most first drafts are usually bad in comparison to final drafts. In regard to the overall tone held throughout the essay; Lamott’s tone strikes me as being dry, sarcastic, and even humorous at times, which made it that much more enjoyable to read. Furthermore, I also feel that Lamott was suggesting that the process of writing a first draft is more important than worrying about the final product, which I completely agree with. For example, when I write my first drafts I tend to “free write” and zip through it, rather than fret over…
