Anne Geddes was born on September 13, 1956, in Sydney, Australia. She dropped out of school at 17, and later met her now husband Kel. After the two married, they moved to Hong Kong. After moving to Auckland, New Zealand with her husband in 1988, Anne set up her first studio. At 25 years old she taught herself photography. She used her husband’s 35 mm Pentax K1000 camera. Anne had by this time built a small portfolio of photographs, thus starting her career as a baby photographer. The emotional content of a photograph, to Geddes, is the most important element of a photograph. Because her work has simplicity and personality, people are drawn to her style of photography. She loves babies, and believes that every child should be “protected, nurtured, and loved” (About Anne). Her whimsical photographs of babies capture the beauty, vulnerability, and purity of children. Her books have been published in 83 countries, and her calendars have been a huge success. Anne’s calendars have been consistently successful, with the 2015 calendar being the 24th consecutive edition (About Anne). The sheer fun and playfulness of these photos make me happy just looking at them! This collection is used on a 2015 calendar. “Down in the Garden” is another fun collection of photographs depicting babies in such poses as babies in cans of vegetables, babies in pea pods and flower pots, babies dressed as flowers, and a baby “butterfly” sleeping atop a mushroom. These photos also give me a happy feeling looking at the serenity of the babies posed in such a playful way.
