He would understand persecution, prejudice, living in fear of violence that could come with people’s hate. He would also have to overcome all of that (to achieve his dream at the Olympics) with mental and spiritual strength. As an athlete so much of what he had to do to overcome obstacles he had to do alone, too, like Anne Frank. Incredibly, like Anne Frank, Jesse Owens would encounter the hate of Hitler’s Germany. Unlike Anne Frank, though he would have the benefit of being older and having a perspective that about life and society that were less sheltered. He would start off by talking about what it took to overcome adversity, and he might say “we all have dreams…to make them a reality…it takes determination, dedication…” (Owens et al.). The others might agree, but it would be Anne Frank that would know that determination was her most important asset. Perhaps understanding that sometimes dreams can be crushed by intense adversity, Jesse Owens might turn the conversation toward hope and goodness regardless of the outcome. He would say, “find the good…find it, showcase it and you’ll start believing” (Owens et al.).
