The involvement of the Netherlands in World War II began with its invasion by Nazi Germany on 10 May 1940. On 22 June 1941 is when Jews started to be arrested in Amsterdam. The penalties for helping Jewish people hide from the Nazis were Execution, Vicious beatings, bullet the head, hanging etc. If you helped a Jew in Nazi Germany you were called a traitor, which was in Nazi ideology worse than a Jew. The allies liberated Amsterdam on the 5th of May 1945 right at the very last days of the war. There were many concentration camps in Europe in the time of the holocaust and people didn’t necessarily die by getting killed by the Nazis sometimes it was infection and other health problems. Anne frank and her sister were first sent to Auschwitz the most well-known camp, but a month later Anne and her sister Margot were transported to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Both Margot and Anne contracted Typhus and died in March 1945 - only a few weeks before the allies liberated the Netherlands. During the holocaust many people died including children also that meant people had to hide. Anne Frank went into hiding in 1942 when she was only 13 years old, by the time she was killed in the concentration camp she was only a mere 15 years old. Peter van Pels was Anne’s boyfriend but sadly enough He died after a death march from Auschwitz to Mauthausen, only three days prior to the liberation of the camp. Anne also wrote about him in fact he was the reason for Anne Frank's story, "My First Article."
