Anne was born Anneliese Marie Frank to Otto and Edith Frank on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany . Nearly four years after Anne was born Adolf Hitler became the chancellor of Germany and he and his Nazi government issued a series of measures that were aimed at the Jewish citizens ( “Anne Frank” History.com).
In the fall of 1933 Otto Frank moved to Amsterdam, where he started a small but successful company. After staying behind with her grandmother in Aachen, Anne joined her family in Amsterdam in February of 1934. This forced the Frank family into hiding in an attic apartment behind Otto’s business which later became known as the Secret Annex. (History.com “Anne Frank”) Anne Frank received her famous journal for her thirteenth birthday as a gift (Frank, 11). In her diary Anne wrote of her fears, ambitions, and even her optimism while she was hidden in the Secret Annex (Biography.com “Anne Frank).
In August of 1944, the Frank family was taken away because of an anonymous tip. The family was split apart and Anne and Margot were sent to different camps. Anne died at age 15 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in the March of 1945. She and Margot both died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen. Anne’s death came just weeks before the British liberated her camp (Biography.com “Anne Frank”).
Otto Frank was the only Frank family member to survive the Holocaust. Otto first published Anne’s diary in 1947 in Dutch (Biography.com “Anne Frank”).
