Van Daan. He does some pretty nasty things in the play, but I think his worst work is when he steals bread for his own selfish appetite. On page 121, the following dialogue takes place:
Dussel: … You dirty thief- … -stealing food- you good-for-nothing…
Mrs. Frank: The bread! He was stealing the bread.
Dussel: It was you, and all the time we thought it was the rats.
What really catches me is the last line from Dussel. He thought that the rats were eating the food. But no. It was Mr. Van Daan, STEALING! He was acting so greedy, that he would rather eat for himself, and let all the kids starve. He doesn’t care about the others. Mr. Van Daan would take from all the others because he was a little hungry. EVERYONE was hungry! And did they steal, NO! I also realize that not everyone was a bad person at heart. Take for example Peter Van Daan. At the beginning of the play, he was not the nicest to Anne. But over time, he became a better person. The following dialogue takes place on page 105: Peter: … Well, any time you want to let off steam, you can come into my room. Anne: … I can get up an awful lot of steam. You’ll have to be careful how you say
