Love and death are very meaningful to humans. Love and death are eternal, above and beyond physical entities, and extremely powerful. The poems “Death be not proud,” by John Donne, and “somewhere i have never travelled,gladly beyond,” by E.E. Cummings are poems about love. “To My Dear and Loving Husband,” by Anne Bradstreet, and “Because I could not stop for Death,” by Emily Dickinson are poems that explain death. Donne, Cummings, Bradstreet, and Dickinson have poems that relate death and love. The poems are very similar despite two being about love and the other two being about death. The entities can never ultimately die. In the poem by John Donne, he says, “One more sleep past, we wake eternally / And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die” (lines 13-14). This quotation states that death will go on even after life, and that life is short compared to the afterlife, because a person spiritually lives forever in the afterlife. The poem also states that death will no longer exist in the afterlife and death will “die.” In the poem by Dickinson, she said, “Since then - ‘tis - Centuries - and yet / Feels shorter than the Day / I first surmised the Horses’ Heads / Were toward Eternity” (21-24). This poem also explains how life was a lot shorter than the afterlife and after death is eternal. Very similarly, the poem by Bradstreet also states that love also will go on forever. The poem states, “Then while we live, in love let’s so preserve / That when we live no more, we may live ever” (Bradstreet 11-12). No one knows exactly what happens after death and no one knows why people fall in love. There are many mysteries about love and death that people will probably never know or comprehend. People will never understand what happens when someone dies, and why people fall in love and what is the point of love. People know that love and death cannot be avoided, which also gives it a greater sense of meaning. Everyone will someday face death and on the other hand, people will one day fall in love with someone or something. Love and death are natural human experiences that happen to everyone. Even though love usually gives the image of happiness, it can be associated with sadness or anger. This can result from cheating or being in an unhealthy relationship. Then on the other hand, death can be associated with happiness or educational, even though it is associated with being scary and sad. Death can be positive by an old person finally dying after a good life or a learning experience for people losing someone they know. They can have alternate meanings of the other.
