Anne Bradstreet As Weary Pilgrim

In Anne Bradstreet’s poem “As Weary Pilgrim” in The Norton Anthology of American Literature: Beginnings to 1820 Volume A I get not only a since of exhaustion, but depression and a since of questioning or begging from God. The title “As Weary Pilgrim” means the poem is about someone that is tired so the since of exhaustion is validate and even more so coupled with the life as a puritan living in the new world. Bradstreet is begging God for death leading me to question her mental stability. Bradstreet seems distraught after the death of a very important man in her life possibly her husband or son. Bradstreet is a tired puritan who is mourning and possible depressed. Anne Bradstreet grew up as a puritan and lived in America with her husband. “For thirst no more shall parch his tongue” (Franklin 234 Line 14). The line is a perfect metaphor for how tired someone is. As well as a perfect example of how they intertwined the bible was in their daily life. Thirst is used a lot in the bible with many bible stories centered around a well. The puritans weave God’s word into all aspects of their daily lives. Their lives were hard too, because they would not have any time to rest. “A weary pilgrim, now at rest” is the first line of the poem (Franklin 233 line 1). This line states that a pilgrim died. The pilgrim must have meant a lot to her because later in the poem she begs for death. “Oh, how I long to be at rest” (Franklin 234 line 23). This leads me to believe that the death was important in her life because she then becomes suicidal or having suicidal thoughts. “Then come, dear Bridegroom, come away” (Franklin 234 line 44).
