Anne Bradstreet was born as Anne Dudley in Northampton, England in 1612. Her parents were Thomas Dudley, who was a steward of the Earl of Lincoln, and Dorothy Yorke. Anne became very well educated due to her father’s high position, which was unique because most women did not receive an education during this time period. Anne was tutored in many languages such as Greek, Latin, French, Hebrew, and English. She was also tutored in history and literature. When Anne was sixteen, she married twenty-five-year-old Simon Bradstreet. Two years after their marriage in 1630, Anne, her husband, and her parents sailed aboard the Arbella with the Winthrop Puritan group to the new world.
