This begins by the tolling of Morning bells. This can be inferred by the fact that Poe calls them Musical and joyous. The next set of bells, he explains, are the bells of a wedding. He describes these as golden and Happy. He then goes on to Tell of the bells of an alarm. He calls these Alarum bells, which, given the fact that he calls them full of terror, can be translated to alarm bells, such as if there’s a fire or a robbery.The next bells he goes on to tell about are the bells of a funeral and explains this by saying that they have a “monotone of solemn thought”(Kinsella 931-34). Poe also tells of people up in a church steeple, that are “not man, nor brute, but ghouls”(Kinsella 931-34). Ghouls, in the era, were associated with the thought of death. So, we can infer that these are the funeral bells sounding.
The Raven, the first poem reviewed, has the literary elements of a first person P.O.V., figurative language, fiction, imagery, narrative poetry, and a prologue. This may have been inspired by Poe’s questioning of an afterlife at the end of his life. The Bells has the literary elements of figurative language, allusions, narrative poetry, Onomatopoeia, omniscient P.O.V., and a grim tone. Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7th, 1849, after being found unconscious three days prior and not regaining.
