From an early age Poe knew what it was like to experience misfortune. He had multiple close loved ones die throughout his life, which is why many believe he wrote about death so often within his poetry. At the tender age of two Poe’s mother died of tuberculosis and he became an orphan. He was fostered by the Allan family, but never quite seemed to get along with his “adoptive” father. At 18, Poe joined the army due to his ensuing debt. He served in artillery for two years until seeking to end his enlistment three years early. Upon returning home Poe discovered his foster mother pronounced dead from an illness not too dissimilar to that of his late mother’s. After the death of his second mother Poe was already becoming all too familiar with the heartbreaking attributes of death. After another death, that of his eldest brother in 1831, and along with his growing debt and increasing alcoholism Poe found himself being discharged from his editing jobs at a local periodical.
