Anna Sewell Black Beauty Analysis

The book that I chose to read for the summer reading project was black beauty, written by Anna Sewell. The story began in meadow where a horse named Black Beauty who is owned by farmer grey, is nurtured by his mother and she teaches him to be a good horse. When he is young farmer Grey begins to break him in and then sells him to Squire Gordon. When Black Beauty arrives at his new home he meets friends Ginger and Merrylegs. He is then sold to a new owner because Squire Gordons wife must move because of her sickness. Beauty and Ginger were sold together, and their mistress worked them very hard and caused them pain just so they would look more fashionable. He is then sold off to a new master named Jerry Barker. Then he is sold a to owners who didn’t take very good care of him. I think the writer was trying to get a message across about how animals are treated. We are given many examples of how Black Beauty and other horses were badly treated and how it affected them. An example of bad treatment was how Ginger was high tempered because her first master pushed her too hard to the point where it was unbearable, if her master would have slowly pushed her to do better and been more gentle she wouldn’t have turned out high tempered. Also, I think this book had a theme of pushing yourself to do your best just like Black Beauty did. Black Beauty was sold many times and treated well and poorly but he always tried his best. For example, when Lady Anne would have the reigns tightened so his head was held high even though it was hard for him he tried his best to be respectful and push through. Also, when Gordon’s mistress was sick he kept running and pushed through so he could get the doctor to save her even though it was hard on
