The Great Gift of Anna Perenna I woke up one morning on a hot, dry day in New York, to a loud wailing noise coming from the kitchen. I stumbled out of bed and saw my parents crowded around the radio, with a tear stained mama and papa silently praying. I automatically went to hug mama, as she was hysterical. “This isn’t fair!”she screamed,”why do we get so much misfortune?” I hugged her while her snot and tears soaked my shirt. I glanced at the clock and realized I had to be off to work at the factory. Even though I was only 14, I had to help my parents scrape together some funds to stay alive. I look up to see the sky lit up with lightning, while the boom of thunder shakes the ground. I give mama my last bit of food, which is a small, rotten apple. As she lays there in a pool of sweat on a wooden door, I open the box Anna gave me. As I peer inside, I see a rusty, battered, locket and a little note. Penia, You’ve been there for me, so now it’s my turn to be there for you. I hope this little gift can help you and your mother. With love, Anna Perenna. Drops of water fell from my eyes onto the note, making the ink spread out and make little intricate swirls and shapes. As I look into the box again, I realized I missed the little envelope tucked at the bottom. As I pull out the contents of the envelope, I start to cry tears of joy. Inside is ten thousand dollars. “Mama!” I cry,”We’re rich! Rich I say! Oh we can get papa out of jail, we can buy a house, we don’t have to live here anymore, oh mama, we can get you better!” Mama glances at me with a smile on her lips, and croaks,”oh Penia honey, All I need is family and good people to get better.” I cry and hug mama. As I look back at the sky, the sun shines through the clouds, creating a beautiful array of colors that fall throughout the city. “Thank you Anna,” I whisper, “You showed me what true kindness is
