Many years ago, there were two twin girls named Anna and Amelie. Excited for Christmas Day they stayed up all night waiting for Santa Claus. They were so excited because they had both asked for the same patent leather shoes and they just knew they would receive them as they had been good all year. Anne’s diary begins on her thirteenth birthday, June 12, 1942, and ends shortly after her fifteenth. Because anti-Semitic laws forced Jews into separate schools, Anne and her older sister, Margot, attended the Jewish Lyceum in Amsterdam. Jeannette once said reading is a form of comfort for her. I couldn’t agree more, we both adore stories similar to our own experiences in life, mostly to see how the protagonists in those novels survive their stories. But unlike her I’ve had and have electricity to read, I’ve never had to stitch up my drunken father’s arm, an I’ve never had to fend for myself while my parents didn’t. I think that she should do what her older sister Lori does: read books like the Wizards of Oz to escape into a fantasy to put her at ease for a little bit. She needs a break from her terrifying life and from her ignorant “guardians”.…

“Girl, Interrupted” by Susanna Kaysen is based on a true story about the author, who spent time at a mental institution called McLean Hospital in the late 1960’s. Throughout the book the author writes about her experiences at the hospital and the people she encountered while she was there. While Susanna Kaysen encountered many people at McLean, none played a major role in the conflict that arises in the book, which is Susanna being sent to the institution and having to face her mental illness. Although it can be argued that the doctor who sent Susanna to McLean is the antagonist, it is clear that Susanna is both the antagonist and protagonist, since her biggest problem is dealing with being sent to a mental institution, her mental illness,…

Fairy tales and the telling of fairy tales cannot be traced to an exact date, but tracings do show that they have been continued to spread from generation to generation for over a hundred years. They were made to set an example, mark an occasion, warn about dangers, and even communicate knowledge. Though many involve magic and fantasy worlds that people tended to actually believe, these people are no different from the people today who believe in miracles or even religion. They have been alive long enough to go through many time periods. The fact that fairy tales do have such a history, supports they would be a great teaching tool in classrooms.…
