Many books claim to contain the secrets of becoming a good writer. Some are written by academics, others by prize-winning writers, and it is often difficult to decide which are worth reading. In 2000, bestselling author Stephen King took his own stab at it (King’s usual subject matter forces me to use that clichéd metaphor), publishing nearly 300 pages of advice for aspiring writers under the tile On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft . King acknowledges almost immediately that “most books about writing are filled with bullshit” (page ix), yet he somehow manages to avoid that fate.…

Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Bethel University offers a few options in which the student can change their class schedule if needed. They have the opportunity to withdraw from the program or to simply drop a class. When a student decides to withdraw, or drop a class, they should always first send an email to their advisory letting them know what they are planning to do. The next step to withdraw would come from their advisor unlike the process to drop a class. If you are dropping a class, then you would log in to V-Camp homepage, at the bottom of the list you will select “Drop Courses” button (Bethel University, 2013, pg. 31).…

There really is no one specific or perfect way to write because everyone has different opinions on what is well written and what is poorly written, so it is important to alter one’s style so as to capture the attention of very different audiences. Kurt Vonnegut, an amazingly talented author from the 20th century, wrote an essay entitled “How to Write with Style” which gives excellent techniques on how to better anyone’s writing style. Writing is not my strong suite; however, as a child, I did not have many problems starting a writing prompt. I can quickly start writing my issue, but when it comes to editing or trying to find the words to state what I am thinking in my head, I have difficulty. The most vivid writing experience for me was when I was in high school, and I had to write an essay on what I wanted my life to be in the future. Little did I know that my life would be different than the way it is today. In my current professional experiences, I use writing for communicating with my coworkers and higher staff, since I am a manager in a kitchen establishment.…

Separate writing for yourself from writing for an audience. Writing is a means of recording information either for yourself or for someone else. Writing for yourself means making notes: recording ideas, things you've done or ideas you have. Nobody else needs to see your notes, so they just need to make sense to you. Shivam 1 Shivam Gupta Professor Keith MacDonald Composition 1 20 October 2017 Read Like a Writer In Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer” he explains how one can become a better reader simply by trying to understand the article from the point of view of the writer, by analyzing every word, sentence or paragraph with one question in mind, "what effect did the writer intend to have with these words?". I believe it is important for us to have this skill because it gives us a better insight into what we are reading, it helps us understand on a deeper level exactly what the article is trying to tell us and in response, this teaches us better techniques and skills to become better writers. Using guidelines set by Bunn in his article, I will illustrate…

Good writing to me means that as soon as you start reading you get intrigued, and it makes you want to read more. In order for that to work though you have to have good grammar, spelling, and punctuation. You have to make your words stand out and flow all together for it all to become a great piece of writing. If you do not know if your writing is good or bad you can always ask for another set of eyes, but if that is not an option you can always run your writing through websites. I run my paper through a website called Paper Rater, but sometimes the internet will not always catch your mistakes, so another option is to take a break and go back to it later and read it again.…
