Voices and laughter floated on the wind. The sound of Nerf darts whacking against both flesh and ground echoed in the player's ears. This was what the club was all about, this was what the members loved to do.
One of Northwest Missouri State Universities key recruiting points is there are over 200 student organization on campus. An organization for everyone. But, while larger organizations like Student Activities Council (SAC) and Student Senate tend to rise to the top there are also a number of smaller and more unique organizations.
Organizations like Wakeboarding Club, Anime Club and Humans vs. Zombies all appeal to a more niche Northwest audience.
Anime Club President Mariah Frederick said the club was created as a place for students

“The humans don't want to get tagged and the zombies are trying to chase them.”
Wakeboarding club member Chye Reiste said wakeboarding is a water sport very similar to water skiing but with only one board. Reiste also said even though it may seem strange to have a club in northern Missouri the team still meets often.
“As a team, we try to meet about once a week until the water is unbearably cold,” Reiste said.
Frederick said being a part of the club has been some of her favorite Northwest memories so far as she has gotten to connect with people with similar interests.
“Some of my favorite memories of Anime club are being able to meet so many people who have the same interests that I do, as well as our white elephant gift exchange that we had just before winter break,” Frederick said. “And of course, our yearly club trip to Naka-Kon (anime convention in Overland Park) is a huge highlight, and we all work very hard all year to be able to go.”
Crossen said one of the highlights of Humans vs. Zombies was the escape it provided him.
“It's a good way to get away from school work and to be active,” Crossen said. “Also, it's just a great way to meet good people who want to have some

But, the struggles also lead her to make some very strong friendships.
“I have made some pretty great relationships with the other girls on the team and we hang out a lot outside of the club,” Reiste said. “I don't hang out with the boys as much but everyone on the team is friends with everyone.”
Frederick said people have a lot of wrong assumptions about the club and is working to counter those assumptions.
“Something people may not know is that we don't limit ourselves to just Japanese animation,” Frederick said. “We consider anime to be a broad term, so we also watch things such as Miraculous Ladybug, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
Frederick said there are also a lot of things only available to Anime Club members.
“There are also special privileges to being a member of our club, such as access to VRV (a streaming site which covers everything from cartoons to horror films) and access to our library of anime DVDs as well as manga (Japanese comics),” Frederick said. “Plus members have the ability to not only get cheaper tickets to Naka-Kon but the ability to stay in a hotel close to the convention for a fraction of the cost. Our members this year only paid
