Animal Trial Persuasive Essay

One pig was hung, another burnt in public. Animal trials were a very common thing in the Middle ages. If your animal hurt another human or destroyed crops it could be sent to court and tried just as a regular person would be. In the Middles ages animals were tried for many things and punished in many different ways, such as jail time or even execution. September 5, 1379, Perrinot Muet was killed by two herds of pigs who had grown aggravated, attacking Muet until he passed. The pigs who had actually done the killing and the pigs that just stood by and watched were put on trial. During the trial the court tried the two herds of pigs the same way they would have tried a person in a case like this. At the end of the case the pigs were found guilty, and sentenced to death. However the owner of the pigs, Friar Humbert de Poutiers, wrote a letter to the Duke of Burgundy, begging him to let the on looking pigs free due to the fact that he would not be able to suffer the economic loss of all of his pigs. The court agreed, and let the pigs who did not participate in the killing go, but they still executed the three pigs who killed Perrinot Muet. If a person is killed by an animal we will go through great lengths to try and prove whether or not the animal actually did it, now we won’t have a large trial with judges and witnesses, but we will go through many tests to see whether or not the animal is guilty. If we do decide the animal, say a dog or a pig, did kill a person, then rather than publicly executing the animal or sending the animal to the county jail, we will have the animal put down. We still do, in our own way, put an animal on trial if they are a killer in order to give the deceased
