Medical Research vs Animal Testing
The harmful use of animals in experiments is not only cruel but also ineffective. Animal research is a serious action against innocent animals. "Animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies, and killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck-breaking, decapitation, or other means" (“Should Animals Be Used”). Animals do not need to be under these circumstances. They do not deserve to be treated like this, and scientists are realizing that sometimes the results of the animals will not be the same to humans.
Animals are being killed for a slight chance to make sure humans will be safe. Animal research is still being used today to confirm that products used on humans will be safe. Medical researches go to the extent of killing other innocent animals to learn how it will affect humans. Although, "in recent years there has been an increasing focus on the problems of using animals in medical research" (Nogrady), they are still proceeding with the testing on the animals. Even though one may say, “animal research is highly regulated, with laws in place to protect animals from mistreatment” (“Should Animals Be Used”). They say animals being tested are being protected by the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA), but it is proven that "95% of animals used in experiments are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act. The AWA does not cover rats, mice, fish and birds, which comprise around 95% of the animals used in research" (“Should Animals Be Used”).
