Although animal research can be beneficial in many ways, such as finding vaccines and cures for diseases, its cruelty and unethicality are unacceptable. Many of the animals used in these experiments are tortured unnecessarily and end up losing their lives in extremely painful ways. Furthermore, there are reliable alternatives to animal testing, meaning this cruelty can be forever removed from our culture. In early times, people would feed animals different foods and see if they got sick. Then they would know if it was safe for them to eat. In 320 BC Avezoar, a Greek philosopher, preformed the first animal dissection. He then later introduced trying medical procedures on animals before they were tried on human patients. In 1242, Ibn al-Nafis studied the circulation of blood in living mammals. By the 1880’s people like Emily Von Behring were testing toxins and other substances on mammals to see what their effects could be to humans. Now scientist use animals to research things from diseases and medicine to cosmetics and food products. We have made incredible discovers with animal research and have learned how to cure many diseases. However, there is a great controversy over animal research. For instance many people argue that animal testing is a cruel and violent way of abolishing our curiosities, whiles still others argue without it, we will never be able to cure the many unfortunate conditions that plague us today.
