The standard living situation for the animals in testing centers can cause not only psychological distress which can affect the results of a test, but these living conditions can actually cause physical harm in addition so what the experiments are already causing.
There is a reason that many scientist and activist have created alternatives to animal testing. The use of live animals is not just against ethics but, can be costly to a business after a long period of time. Alternatives are used in accordance to the three R’s “reduction, refinement, and replacement”. (USDA) These standards were created by Russel and Burch and were put into place to help the wellbeing of animals used in testing facilities all over the world.
The first R to look at is reduction which means to reduce the total number of animals used. There can often be an excess of live animals put in harms way to create the same results that could be received from a smaller group of test subjects. Using only the necessary number of animals for the best results is advised so to decrease the number of animals in that
