Many animal rights activists do not realize the benefits of testing on animals; they claim that it is "unethical" or "cruel" to perform experiments on such creatures. The truth is, the world as a whole has advanced tremendously in the past century due to animal experimentation. We are affected every day by at least one thing that has been influenced by animal testing. Many of the things we take for granted would not exist if it were not for experimenting with animals. The medicine that we need and the products that we use are just a few of the benefits that these animals bring to us. Animals are sometimes used in the testing of drugs, vaccines and other biologics, and medical devices, mainly to determine the safety of the medical product. For products such as drugs and biologics, the focus of animal testing is on the drug’s nature, chemistry, and effects and on its potential damage to the body. Animal testing is used to measure things such as how much of a drug or biologic is absorbed into the blood, how a medical product is broken down chemically in the body, the toxicity of the product and its breakdown components and how quickly the product and its breakdown components are excreted from the body (“Why are Animals Used”). These animals being used are not only used for the benefit of human beings; without them the products that are used to keep animals safe from disease, healthy, and clean would not be available either.
