The Improper Use of Animals 94% of drugs that pass animal tests fail in human clinical trials. According to neurologist Aysha Akhtar, over 100 stroke drugs that were effective when tested on animals have failed in humans. Animals are poor models for human beings because of their cellular differences and can cause major problems. Based on research and evidence, testing on animals is cruel and should be brought to the attention of everyone. Thomas Hartung at John Hopkins University argues for alternatives to animal testing because “we are not 70kg rats.”
According to Humane Society International, animals are commonly subjected to force feeding and inhalation, food and water deprivation, and …show more content…
Flaws in research due to the animals have been found all over the world. Animals have different makeups and genes than we do. We have very different DNA codes and are made in different ways. If you test something on a rat, it could have a great different outcome on a human. For example, in 1950 a sleeping pill was created to help pregnant women sleep at night. The outcome was that ten thousand babies were born with severe deformities. This pill was tested on animals before it was released. Again a drug called Arthritis Drug Vioxx, showed a positive effect on the hearts of mice, but it caused more than twenty-seven thousand heart attacks. At least 94% of procedures on animals have failed to help humans. Many animals are dying due to animal tests for products that will never be used in the real …show more content…
An unscheduled DNA synthesis animal test costs $32,000, while the non-animal test costs $11,000. The U.S National Institutes of Health spends $14 billion of its $31 billion annual budget on animal research. Another big funding resource for animal experimentation comes from taxes, charitable donations, and the purchase of lottery tickets along with consumer products. A lot of the tests done on animals are for cures and medicines we can use to prolong our lives, instead of dying from getting a disease. Even though all this money has gone into this, the U.S still ranks 26th out of 36 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). We should be realizing that animals are also living creatures on this earth just like we are, and should not be being used as test
