“Many animal experiments utilize restraining devices, designed to prevent an animal from moving” (New England Anti-Vivisection Society). Not only can animals be physically abused on the outside, but on the inside as well. “Testing can range from testing new drugs to testing new diseases, to poisoning for toxicity testing” (New England Anti-Vivisection Society). In addition, animal testing can go further than just restricting animals from moving. “Animal testing can also cause long-term isolation, electric shocks, withholding of food and water, and even more¨ (New England Anti-Vivisection Society). Although, animals contributed to many life saving cures and treatments, ¨Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year¨ (DoSomething.org). Also, ¨Animals are used to learn more about living things and about the illnesses that afflict human beings and other animals¨(Science, Engineering, Medicine 4). Although this may be true, ¨92% of experimental drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work¨ (DoSomething.org). Even so, ¨By studying animals, it is possible to obtain information that cannot be learned in any other way¨ (Science, Engineering, Medicine 4). Despite, studying animals, ¨Labs that use mice, rats, birds, reptiles and amphibians are exempted from the minimal protections under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA)¨
