Silver Spring Monkeys aren’t the type of animal you hear on an everyday basis, however they are certainly important in today’s society. In 1981, Alex Pacheco went undercover as a scientist for the Institute for Behavioral Research. During his work there, he discovered 17 silver spring monkeys captured in small metal cages, all of them suffering from living in their own stench and feces. Many of the silver spring monkeys had lost the movement of some limbs due their spinal nerves being severed. Alex Pacheco and several others founded PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and have been educating the public about it since this incident. With 6.5 million people supporting PETA, and …show more content…
One of the many ways animals are used during testing, specifically rabbits, is the Draize eye test. This test studies the irritation caused by a certain substance, the rabbit’s eye is then forced open for several days to prevent them from blinking the product away. After the majority of tests on rabbit have been conducted the rabbit is then killed, as they are no longer a viable source of information. When animals undergo testing, they are subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, starvation and water deprivation, pain infliction, and wound infliction to study the healing process of different species. The Humane Society of the United States conducted a survey asking whether or not they thought animal testing was morally right. However, it showed that 68% of people said that they opposed animal. If this survey shows that the majority of the participants were against it, why should we continue to do it? The Draize eye test (used to study irritation) involves forcing open the eyes of rabbits for multiple days so that they cannot blink away the products being tested upon them. This is just one of the ways animals suffering when tested on, others are force feeding, water deprivation, and pain infliction. While the effects of animal testing are not only horrific, but they aren’t always …show more content…
One research case that was done found that 95% of drugs tested on animals failed on humans. A total of 93 side effects found on humans, only 19% were predicted on the animals. The same exact study learned that when rats and mice were used for testing, they were only 43% accurate. A particular drug, called Vioxx used for arthritis, showed that it was safe during the animal testing stage. However, in 2004 it was taken off the market. This drug alone had caused nearly 60,000 deaths in just the United States. Even if some animals were biologically and metabolically close to humans, many other factors on animals and humans cause change the results. One major factor that affects these results is stress, this can cause a change in heart rate, muscular activity, hormone levels, pulse, and blood pressure. Realistically, many animals are very different from humans. These animals may still be used during testing, and the results would not reflect what would actually happen if it were to be used by a human. Many other researchers and cases have shown that animal testing is indeed ineffective. If it isn’t up to par and inaccurate, why use animals rather than other methods of
