Animal Testing is Cruel and Unnecessary The use of animal testing is very popular today in the advancement of medicine, but the costly effects outweigh the benefits. There are many cost effective and positive alternatives to animal testing. It is not useful for the advancements of medicine and is only still around today for the financial benefits that come with these tests. Can we truly eliminate animals from medical research? The answer is yes based on many medical advancements made by doctors all over the world. There are many alternatives to testing on animals and the effectiveness of these alternatives is astounding. One great example of an alternative is found in the human lung that was made by Doctor Donald Inger …show more content…
Xenotransplantation is transplanting cells, tissues or organs from one species to another species. Genetic engineering is very similar and also creates a great deal of pain and suffering for the test subjects. This engineering kills so many animals in the process of trying to create animals with specific traits. Genetic engineering affects primates, cats, dogs, mice, rats, and others. Most of the animals involved lose their life, but if they survive they suffer from extreme abnormalities and other horrible conditions …show more content…
Radial keratotomy is a surgical procedure that is performed to help vision without glasses. This surgical advancement was tested many times on animals, but when researchers thought they had it perfected on rabbits they began to test it on humans. This surgery proved to be dangerous, and it made the first few human test subjects blind. It is still argued that animal testing is still necessary for the use of medication testing, but the facts prove otherwise. Of the 198 new medications released between 1976 and 1985, 102 were either withdrawn from the market or relapsed because of serious side effects the researchers did not expect when testing them on rats and mice. The side effects included lethal dysthymia, heart attacks, kidney failure, seizures, respiratory arrest, liver failure, and stroke. With all of the evidence of the dangers of animal testing, it obviously should not be used to advance medicine (Greek). It is proven and obvious that the best test species for humans is humans. It is impossible to relate the data gathered from animal testing over to how it will affect humans because of the differences in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry (Alternatives in

Maybe one day technology will have advanced so far as to render animal testing unnecessary, which would be ideal, but that day is simply not today. However we must not be wanton or ruthless in our testing of animals, just as animal test subjects are necessary so are the ethical and moral policies that regulate animal testing. Scientific advancement should never rely on what is blatantly cruel and scientists should always strive to do as little harm or cause as little distress as possible to their test subjects. Animal testing can lead to great advancements in medical technology and it is our job to make sure that we take the comfort and well being of the animals being tested into account. After all, to anthropomorphize for a moment, isn’t that the least we can do for the beings who are helping us treat all the diseases we are susceptible…

There are many alternatives to animal testing and excuses need to stop being made to keep animal testing in business. It may seem like it is the only option, but there are so many new ways to do the exact same test in ways which do not involve animals at all. It is cruel and inhumane to keep animals in small cages and not only physically, but also mentally harm them. Artist Leonardo Da Vinci once said, “The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.” The time for animals to be treated similarly to humans can be…

Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 BC (Animal Testing Pro & Con). Scientist use animals for many different purposes. Animals are used to test the effectiveness and safety of new drugs before those drugs are given to people to treat illness and disease. Animals can also be used as test subjects for products like lipstick, eyeshadow, contact lens solution, and shampoo (Hayhurst, 26).…

Many examples in the history of medicine not performing the way it is planned is due to the barrier between animals and humans. In the 1950’s an epidemic had hit the United States after an animal tested product was being distributed in stores. These sleeping pills carried a drug that if not moderated can affect the lives of unborn babies. These tests were done on pregnant animals such as rats, guinea pigs, and even cats. Forcing dogs to undergo dangerous experiments vastly diminishes their chances of becoming a part of a family due to health issues they face as a result of this research. Health issues are the main outcome for many of these animals, impacting them for the rest of their lives. If researchers cared for these animals humanely and reduced their pain, resulting health issues probably would not be as abundant (Garner). Researchers do not treat their test subjects as living and conscious animal, but instead as objects. During past experiments, animals eyelid’s have been held open with clips while substances are forced into their eyes (Haugen).…

One of the many ways animals are used during testing, specifically rabbits, is the Draize eye test. This test studies the irritation caused by a certain substance, the rabbit’s eye is then forced open for several days to prevent them from blinking the product away. After the majority of tests on rabbit have been conducted the rabbit is then killed, as they are no longer a viable source of information. When animals undergo testing, they are subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, starvation and water deprivation, pain infliction, and wound infliction to study the healing process of different species. The Humane Society of the United States conducted a survey asking whether or not they thought animal testing was morally right.…

Animal testing has been a part of our society since the early 1900s. And it appears to me, that not until around 40 years ago or so, people began to realize that testing animals was inhumane on many different levels. But because we are the human beings that we are, we still try to shy away from a lot of the negative consequences of animal testing. It is easier for us to push aside that which is bad and try only to look at the positive aspects. Yet, in my opinion, the cons outweigh the pros.…

After studying multiple views on animal testing I have come to realize my personal view has now changed since the start of my research. Before undergoing heavy study into animal testing I believed that all types of animal testing should be stopped, but now I believe that the idea is very beneficial and should only be done when the rights of the animal are considered. In the coming years, hopefully, more regulations can be passed to ensure that all animal’s lives are protected during experimentation. Although most animals are treated with care and no pain is dealt to them when undergoing testing, it would be a lie if I stated no animals are harmed during the process. Animal testing is extremely useful in developing life-saving drugs and medicine.…
