The LD test mentioned above does not actually test the reaction humans might have to a substance but merely determines how toxic that substance is to that quantity of animals. Furthermore, the results of the test cannot even be applied to humans, because the results derived from testing mice are not fully compatible with those brought from testing rats, let alone being compatible to dogs and humans. The age and sex of the animal can also skew the results and therefore render them …show more content…
What makes these tests so grotesque is that the animal subjects are rarely given painkillers or anesthesia, because doing so would “contaminate” the experiment. Thus, the animals must suffer in their undeserved pain, and the vast majority of the animals die due to the testing or side effects. The few animals that do survive are killed and disposed of just like any other trash. Dogs, cats, mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, monkeys, horses, and pigs being used and then discarded as if they were never a living, breathing creature. What is truly upsetting is that these animals are dying in vain, and the statistics prove it; less than 2% of human illnesses are ever seen in animals, only 1.16% to be exact. The tests done are not accurate representations of possible human reactions either. For example, animal tests showed that lemon juice was found to be poisonous for animals, but hemlock and arsenic were safe. In humans this proved be the exact opposite. Aspirin, penicillin, and insulin failed animal tests and caused birth defects, but are actually very effective for humans. Morphine sedates humans but stimulates
