Right now, millions of animals are locked inside cold, dark cages in laboratories around the world. They languish in agony, ache with loneliness, and long for freedom. Instead, they sit there and wait for the next excruciating procedure they will encounter. Animal testing for medical purposes has been used for hundreds of years, though only in the past decade animals have been used for cosmetic purposes. According to the Humane Society, approximately 100,000 to 200,000 animals undergo or die just from cosmetic testing yearly. Animals such as guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, mice, and rats are used for cosmetic testing. Due to animal testing for medical purposes: heart transplants, modern anesthetics, blood transfusions, vaccines, cat scans, and many other medical advancements became possible. Companies such as Smashbox Cosmetics, Bath & Body Works, Urban Decay, and Anastasia Beverly Hills does not test; a few that do test are M.A.C. Cosmetics, L 'Oreal, Axe, Benefit Cosmetics, Clinuque, and Sephora Cosmetics. Cosmetic companies test on animals to provide data they can use to defend themselves if the company is sued by injured consumers. There has been major controversy over animal used both for cosmetic and medical purposes. Although animal testing is necessary and understandable for medical purposes, testing for cosmetic purposes is capitalistic, unnecessary, and unethical.
