The total amount of animals killed each year in research is 19,500,000, there are many opinions on animal testing on whether it is beneficial or necessary. Proponents think that animal testing is important because it keeps humans from unnecessary testing, and helps us come up with new techniques to keep people healthy. Opponents oppose this because there are alternatives to animal testing, it is not safe for animals, and animals are very different from human beings and therefore make poor test subjects. In my opinion, I think that if there are alternatives to animal testing that there is no question that we should switch over. Animals should not suffer for our own benefit, and even the thought of these animals in labs being tested on hurts my heart. Using these animals as test subjects is a horrible idea because they are biologically different than humans, so stuff that is safe to them could be dangerous to us.
We have been testing on animals for a very long time, and we now have alternatives that work better. As said by the former U.S. National Institutes of Health director Dr. Elias Zerhouni that animal testing has been a massive failure; “The problem is that [animal testing] hasn’t worked, and it’s time we stopped dancing around the problem.… We need to refocus and adapt new methodologies for …show more content…
They might argue that animal research is highly regulated with rules to prevent mistreatment. Still, I believe that even though these people may be trying to persuade us that the animals are being treated fine; the fact is that many die from the same animal testing they say is “safe”. I will always argue that animal testing is wrong because animals deserve better than this, and I think that we could do much better. Animals are so forgiving, but the only way to get their forgiveness is to stop animal testing all
