Cosmetic testing has been around since the early 20’s. There are several groups that try to shut down all the companies that are testing on animals. The first known testing was designed in the 1920’s and it was developed to test the toxicity of certain products that would be sold to people around the world. Testing cosmetics on animals in the United States is very common. About a thousand mice, guinea pigs, rats and rabbits undergo pain or die each year from the rigorous testing that they go through. Animal testing is different depending on the circumstances as well as the products that are being tested on them.

In the 1950’s saw animal testing help in the development of vaccines. Animal testing peaked mostly during the 1980s and has since been on the decline. The decline is due to change in rules regarding the testing of cosmetics on animals which now makes it more difficult for companies to test their products. Some of the testing that was conducted were The Draize eye- and skin-irritation/corrosion test dates back to the 1940s. During this test, rabbits are often immobilized in full-body restraints while a substance is dripped into their eyes or smeared onto their shaved skin. Laboratory technicians then record the damage, which can include inflamed skin, ulcers, bleeding, bloody scabs, swollen eyelids, irritated and cloudy eyes, or even blindness, at specific intervals for hours or days.
