Surprisingly, animals often times take on unusual relationships during their lifetime. Sometimes the relationships are used just for comfort, while other times the relationships benefit both animals to achieve survival. Animals can help to protect each other in ways not thought of often. Most animals are stereotyped to stay within the facility of their own kind. This does not mean that some animals will not adhere to the normal way of life. They will call on other animals to help them meet their needs. Some animals need a companion to have stuck around throughout both animal's lifetime. For example, no one would think that cats and dogs would be a good match. Animals in odd relationships care for each other just like the dog can do for the kittens. Even though it is an odd pair, the mother dog will defiantly give the care of kittens. In the passage "Animal Roles and Relationships" it says, "Lionesses also have a strong parental instinct. Not only do they care for their own cubs, but they will care for each other's cubs as well." The statement from the passage is a reminder that since a lion takes care of cubs that are not even hers, a dog will defiantly do the same with a litter of kittens. Just like the lion, dogs are also known to have a very strong parental instinct. Dogs will sometimes take care of puppies that are not theirs. Another example would be in the second passage called "Unusual Animal Friendships" where it talks of an owl being protected by a dog. In the text, it specifically states," The handler says that Torque is very protective of Shrek." In the previous statement, Shrek is an owl is in need of care which Torque is a dog that provides care to the owl.
