Hopeless, starving, and beaten; every day that goes by, another helpless animal is found on the street, suffering or dead. Animal abuse is a very serious topic that more people need to discuss and need to be educated on and aware of. Animals are being abused, neglected, abandoned, being used for profit and starved by people all over the world. Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year as a result of neglect. About 649,000 animals who enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners. Of the dogs entering shelters, approximately 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized and 26% of dogs who came in as strays are returned to their owner (ASPCA).

First human agents focused on preventing mistreatment (Arluke 23). All known societies have likely appealed some sort of censure to human-animal relations. Acts of animal abuse have been around for a long time. The exotic animal act was developed during the 20th century in hopes to allow greater human-animal relations to get closer to nature and protect endangered and exotic animals (Evan 119). In one society, Hottie laws were created for if a man had intercourse with a pig, dog, sheep, or goat and stated that it was an abomination and he should be put to death. Although in that time if a woman had intercourse with a cow, horse or mule and her man was away as a soldier it would be okay and no punishment (Beirne 100). The Anti-Cruelty law focuses on protecting animals instead of humans (Arluke 24). There are many forms of abuse and some result in brutal deaths. There have been laws against animal abuse even in other societies centuries ago. Many organizations are pitching in to help get strays off the street and helping to fix up animals in need. Animals that are abused aren’t only hurt physically they’re hurt mentally and emotionally too just like humans. Animal abuse not only occurs in places like a home it can occur in zoos, circuses, television, even the happiest of places. It's even been debated from an activist that hunting is a form of animal abuse and animals have been hunted to extinction by humans. The reason behind why people abuse animals is unknown but there are many theories as to why. Animal abuse is an awful thing no human should do and people need to be more aware of the horrors of animal
