Pets are a big part of people’s lives and each year, more and more people are gaining pets. Also, each year people are spending more on caring for their pets. With almost 80million pets in the US alone, the care industry has plenty of business and it is believed that the care industry will be thriving in the upcoming years (Franchise help, 2016). For example, in 2014 U.S owners spent almost $56.4 billion on care services for their animals and it is expected to reach $69.4 at 2020 (BCC Research, 2010).
In 2014 it was reported that 67% of animal shelters in the UK had noticed that the number of dogs abandoned in the UK had increased (CO-OP, 2014). This means that more careers will become available for kennel workers and welfare officers, so their future will be sustainable for the foreseen future.
Pet obesity is a growing crisis as each year more pets become severely overweight. In 2013 the US saw 52.6% and 57.6% of cats were overweight. This has since grown to 53.8% of dogs and 58.2% of cats becoming overweight (Pet Obesity Prevention, 2015). With obesity being the most serious disease in dogs and cats, veterinarians are having to train in new areas to be able to assist owners in helping their overweight pets reach a healthy weight (Churchill and Ward 2016).

Welfare inspectors should be trained to handle animals and specifically aggressive animals (Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974).
