This quote describes Pi's opinion on freedom. He describes freedom the ability to exercise free will with one's time, space, and relations. Animals and anyone's life that is always threatened do not have this free will. This quote also talks about Pi's struggle for survival which limits his freedom and eventually brings him down to the level of animals. This shows Pi’s maturity on his opinions of freedom.…
The author’s main purpose about defending the rights of the animals is that they are living creatures. His strong claim determines that researchers are finding animals are more like humans than we ever realized. However, defying by Rifkin’s statement’s and the reason he points out the connection is because us people have not really payed attention to be able to realize the similarity. Animals pass on learning or skills to their young ones which goes the same exact way with humans, most likely why many children look up to or choose to follow their parents footsteps.…
We must respect these creatures because we are just like them. Goodall describes a time in her life at a university where the professors would tell her that animals didn’t have personalities. They would also tell her that animals weren’t supposed to have names, and Goodall found this outrageous. (Goodall 21) Goodall made animal emotions a legitimate area for scientific investigation, because she always believed all species are alike.…

PHI 1000 Fall 2016 Prof. Drain Essay #2 Thoughts on Thought After examining the several angles to the issue of animal cognition, it is my conclusion that non-human animals are in fact capable of thought. Although humans certainly display a superior cognitive ability, I believe the cognition of animals is not of an entirely different type, and that whatever difference remains is simply one of degree. While Davidson and Descartes tend to argue that language is a necessary component for rational creatures, Hobbes and Searle give non-human creatures more “cognitive credit,” citing their ability perceive, and to have and correct beliefs, as proof of being conscious, thinking, beings. Pointing to the immense biological similarities between humans…
The Contrast Between Animality and Humanity in The Island of Doctor Moreau and Life of Pi One of the major cultural anxieties that prevails in society is the relationship between humans and animals and the distinction between humanity and animality. Humans are often depicted as being a higher form of animal, most commonly induced by religious practices. However, upon isolation or fear of death, the human thought process tends to revert to what is associated to animal-like behaviour. Humans tend to separate themselves from animal life forms as animals are seen as vicious, brutish and capable of committing acts that humans refrain from. Because of this cultural anxiety, much of literature embodies the ideology of animality and humanity and the…
In comparison of “All Animals Are Equal and Moral Standing,” the “Value of Lives, and Speciesism” the key differences are based on the values outlined by the writers. In Value of Lives and Speciesism, Frey discusses the importance of animals feel pain and suffer just as humans do, but also admits that there are reasons such as necessary medical research for harming animals. On the other hand, Singer’s All Animals Are Equal focuses on the rights of hemostats in comparison to those who can make intelligent decisions. The question is should non-human animals have rights and how far do those rights reach? Both agree that animals should have rights, but their major differences including, pleasure and pain, hierarchy, consumption, and richness of life.…
Huxley develops a warning about the structure of societies by showing how the society in Brave New World creates a loss of individuality, creativity, and freedom of thought, while also misusing technology. In addition to this, he uses imagery and allusions to highlight the negative effect these things have on the citizens of Brave New World. In Brave New World, Huxley warns readers against a loss of individuality as well as a loss of deep personal relationships. By mass producing twins, manipulating embryos, and conditioning children, this society has done away with individuality.…

Over time society has come to recognize certain objects, like the Red Cross, flashing lights, and hospital signs, as being the universal symbols of aid. However, many of these symbols do not necessarily need to be tangible objects in order to represent something greater, but can be a concept even as subtle as a colour that, when repeatedly shown in certain contexts, comes to symbolize the same as an ambulance responding to an emergent call. Some of the strongest symbols in literature include this type of symbolism, which subtly makes a reading more interesting and powerful, even if the reader does not initially comprehend what the symbol is. In Yann Martel’s novel, Life of Pi, the colour orange is a symbol that portrays Pi’s eventual return to safety, through the presence of various objects, animals, and a personification of Pi himself onto an unsuspecting wild creature. In essence, objects like life jackets and whistles are automatically a representation of hope and survival, however, within Life of Pi, both of these objects also appear as being the colour…
Emotion has been a developing field in psychology for years now and recently expanded beyond understanding just human emotion. Years ago, animals were only studied to see how they modeled human emotion, but now these animals are not just lab rats but viewed as unique creatures with their own behaviors and feelings that compare to a humans, but are not the same. In fact the field of animal emotion is growing more and more as animal behavior becomes a popular profession and easier to research. This raises the question, how similar to human emotion is animal emotion? Are they alike at all and how much emotion do animals express?…
Pi situation was so severe that he was forced to go against what he believed if he wanted to live. This shows how when given enough time, an individual will adapt to any situation put into, thus every life is interchangeable. Eventually, Pi went from being a kind vegetarian, respectful of all life, to a person who commonly hunted and killed animals to stay alive. However, since Pi must do these everyday tasks to live, it became part of his daily routine and he began to tolerate such a change.
