What’s Your Name? Your parents named you. Your grandparents named your parents. Your great-grandparents named your grandparents. Though no one technically knows why, it is very important they did. In Animal Farm by George Orwell, a group of energetic animals overthrows an old, drunken farmer. Each animal plays a different role in the rebellion and contributes to their new lives. The main characters in the book are Napoleon, Snowball, Squealer, and Boxer. Each one of them has their own view of life, but eventually follow someone else’s beliefs. George Orwell strategically named the pigs and horses of Animal Farm based on their personalities and actions. Orwell named the leader pig, Napoleon, after the French military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte.

Boxer works the hardest on the farm. He is literally fighting against himself, pushing himself beyond his strength. Boxer will keep working no matter the conditions of the outdoors, or the condition of his own well being. Although Boxer is a genuinely hard worker, he is not intelligent. He cannot learn past the first four letters of the alphabet. Boxer’s determination to work and finish the windmill makes up for his dumbness. The animals are working on the windmill. They are bringing rocks up the hill, then dropping them so they break. Everyone is exhausted, but Boxer makes up for it. “His two slogans, ‘I will work harder’ and ‘Napoleon is always right,’ seemed to him a sufficient answer to all problems. He had made arrangements with the cockerel to call him three-quarters of an hour earlier in the mornings instead of half an hour” (Orwell 61). Boxer is willing to wake up almost an hour earlier than every other animal just to finish the windmill. This quote is an example of Boxer’s persistence and willing to work and do whatever is needed to be done. Boxer was named mostly for his actions because of this. He fought against his old body and he fought against other animals, like Jessie, who told him not to work so hard.
