When George Orwell was asked to summarize his new novel "animal farm" he said this: "there's a farm and the animals get fed up with the way the farmer runs it so they chuck him out and try to run it for themselves. But they run it just as badly as the farmer and become tyrants like him". needless to say the small summarization could not compare To the passionate intensity invested in this work of literature that is perfectly represented by the major ideas in it. The major ideas help support the major theme. One of the ideas in Orwell's novel that strikes a satiric note is the idea of religion being the "opium of the people" (as Karl Marx famously wrote"). This meaning that religion is an artificial means to keep people happy.

In Animal Farm the pigs gradually change the meaning of being equals with another animal to justify their behavior and actions and to keep the animals from finding out their real intentions. The animals wholeheartedly embrace majors visions of freedom from the humans but after major dies, the pigs gradually twist the meaning of his words to better suit themselves. As a result the other animals can't defy the pigs without also opposing the ideals of the rebellion. Also squealers eloquent speaking ability allows him to make the animals believe almost anything that comes out of his mouth. This is especially shown with squealers interactions with clover and Muriel. Being that Clover is one of the few animals that can actually read the seven commandments, she can tell when they have been altered somehow, but each time she suspects that the seven commandments have been changed squealer manages to convince her that she is wrong. In addition, Napoleon abolishes the singing of" beasts of England" in favor of a new anthem, the lyrics of which contain a promise not to rebel against the pigs rule. Finally at the end of the book, after squealers repeated adjustments of the seven commandments in order to legitimize the pigs treacheries, the main principle of the farm is as stated: "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal …show more content…
Violence is one of the things that the animals wish to abolish from life on the farm once the humans are gone. Jones not only overworks the animals and steal the products of their labor, but he also has the ability to whip or slaughter the animals whenever he thinks the aren't working hard enough or are too tired and old to work. Once the pigs gain control of the farm they, like Jones, discover how useful violence and terror can be. They use this new found knowledge to their full advantage. However instead of using whips as a means of violence, since they burned all of them, Napoleon uses his dogs. His dogs are vicious little beasts who kill the animals that have confessed to crimes against the farm and the dogs freak the animals out, which results in the animals confessing to crimes they didn't commit. " they were all slain on the spot. And so the tale of confessions and executions went on, until there was a pile of corpses lying before Napoleon's feet and the air was heavy with the smell of blood." Terror not only comes in death, but also in threats and propaganda. Each Time the animals dare to question any aspect of Napoleon Authority, squealer threatens them with Jones return. This is extremely threatening to the animals because it would mean another battle against the humans that, if lost, would result in a return to their former lifestyle of being ruled by humans. Jones

The novel indicates and reveals the truth about the Russian Revolution of 1917. The first way Napoleon stays in charge through time is by inflicting fear upon the animals. After the revolution on the farm Napoleon takes nine puppies under his wing and begins to train them. The dogs soon become his guard dogs and attack anyone under his single command (Doc B). For example Napoleon's dogs attacked when they were ordered to chase Snowball the pig away.…

After Napoleon’s dogs expel Snowball from Animal Farm, “Four young porkers…uttered shrill squeals of disapproval…but…the dogs sitting round Napoleon let out deep menacing growls, and the pigs fell silent” (B4). Napoleon’s dogs quickly force obedience upon even the other ruling pigs, proving that the dogs have already established a reputation as creatures to be feared. An important effect of the pigs’ silence is that it prevents a powerful display of dissent that might have destroyed Napoleon’s government. By censoring the other pigs, Napoleon leaves no chance of protest available, and discourages any vocalizations of dissent. Later on, the hens of Animal Farm revolt against Napoleon after he creates a high egg production quota.…

The pigs maintain control through power and fear, This makes the other animals unconfident to the point until they have no will to fight back or fight for their rights. When they were under the control of farmer jones they were underfed and slaughtered when they ran out of use or were fat enough to sell for meat, the only thing that was stopping them from revolting was that mr jones punished the animals that misbehaved. But with the pigs in charge the animals will be killed for revolting.…

Whenever the pigs or dogs break a commandment, Napoleon has Squealer the pig slightly change one of the commandments written on the end of the barn. For example, when the pigs start to drink alcohol, the fifth commandment that originally stated that “No animal shall drink alcohol” (George Orwell, 25) is changed so that it states “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess” (George Orwell, 109). In this instance and many others, Napoleon uses the other animals bad memory and the pig's ability to write to change the law so that the pigs never break it, even though they actually do. The worst part is that at the end of the book, all the commandments are erased and replaced with the sentence “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (George Orwell, 134). This means that Napoleon got rid of all the laws and made it so that the other animals cannot question his actions with factual evidence that he did anything wrong.…

One of the ways they did this was with saying things like "Jones will come back". None of the animals on the farm ever liked Mr. Jones, so when they were convincing the animals that something was right and this way is the best way, they would use "surely, you don't want Jones to come back". The animal government also switched the Seven Commandments around, and then used propaganda to convince the animals that it was fine, with an element of fear. Since the pigs were the head of the farm and they made all the decisions, they "deserved" to have the extra milk and apples and sleep in beds. Without all those things, they would not be able to make the best decisions for the farm and the other animals, and the farm would fall apart.…

Early in the George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm we see Jesse and Bluebell’s 9 puppies raised and trained to be attack dogs. These dogs were the forefront of Napoleons way of maintaining his power. Napoleon used these dogs to threaten anyone who attempted to disobey Napoleon. This is shown when the animals were shocked and surprised with Snowball’s expulsion, several of the animals would have protested but none of them could think of a supportive argument. The pigs however were the smarter animals on the farm and they started “Uttering shrill squeals of disapproval” until the dogs sitting around Napoleon “let out deep menacing growls” which forced the pigs to sit down in silence.…

After the animals drive out Mr. Jones, the cruel owner of the farm, the pigs use his absence to their own advantage. When the pigs create new laws and terms of the farm, they suggest that Mr. Jones will return if the animals do not follow their orders, knowing that all would do anything to prevent it (Orwell 56). The pigs use this excuse throughout the book to get what they want without being questioned. They play on the animals’ fear and ignorance of a time they all can only vaguely remember. Later in the book, all of the animals gather for a meeting and watch as several huge dogs target four pigs that recently had spoken out against Napoleon.…

Animal Farm Napoleon used fear to control the animals on the Animal Farm. In chapter 7, it said “the dogs promptly tore [the pig’s] throats out, and in a terrible voice Napoleon demanded whether any other animal had anything to confess.” This quote shows how Napoleon uses fear, because seeing the death of other animals that have rebelled makes the animals not want to rebel against Napoleon. Throughout Animal Farm, Napoleon says “Mr. Jones is coming back.” Napoleon is showing the animals that their life would suck if Napoleon was not the leader, therefore showing fear.…

One example of the pigs using their superior knowledge to manipulate the animals is with the ever-changing commandments. Originally, the animals had written seven commandments that they all had to follow. As Napoleon 's greed became an untamable hunger, he had Squealer (his right-hand pig) add to them. For instance, rumors start going around the farm that the pigs are sleeping in the farmhouse beds. Clover (a mare) feels as though there was something in the Commandments about beds, so she brings Muriel (a goat who knows how to read) to investigate.…
