Animal Farm: Napoleon And A Duva-Liar

Superior Essays
Napoleon and a Duva-Liar Dictatorship has been around for several years and continues to take over many places in the world. While some believe dictatorship does not exist in modern times, it is still happening in quite a few countries. Not only do dictators hold all power, but many can be cruel. Jean-Claude Duvalier was the dictator of Haiti and compares to Napoleon in Animal Farm by George Orwell because of their harsh similarities to how they rule their people. Although Napoleon is a made up character in Animal Farm, he is strikingly similar to the dictator of Haiti because of their rise to power, unfair laws, and their injustices to the people ‘below’ them. Dictatorship must start from somewhere. While some force …show more content…
For example, Napoleon steps up and becomes the animals’ dictator without their choice by kicking Snowball out (Orwell 37-38). Napoleon uses force to become a dictator because he feels as if he should take after Old Major but ends up doing the complete opposite of what Old Major intended. Given that, Napoleon believes he is doing well, but has many errors, and does not know what he is doing (24). Napoleon does everything the animals are asked not to do. He slowly forms himself into an even worse version of Mr. Jones. Adding to the fact that Napoleon is not very knowledgeable, Snowball comes up with the idea of the windmill, but Napoleon claims it is his idea. He is not as educated as Snowball (49). Other animals on the farm are much more educated than Napoleon. Unlike Napoleon, Jean-Claude Duvalier did not want to become a dictator after his father died. He wanted his sister, Marie-Denise to do it (“Like” 1). The animals have no control over Napoleon becoming dictator like how Jean-Claude did not have a choice. Duvalier was not interested in being head of power for Haiti. He was spoiled and …show more content…
For instance, the quote from Animal Farm shows the unfairness Napoleon expresses throughout the novel, “All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others” (Orwell 92). Napoleon changes the rules that were established so they would suit his needs. Adding to that, the animals began singing ‘Beasts of England’ and Squealer says that Napoleon says it is forbidden (Orwell 60). Napoleon is changing everything Old Major left behind. Old Major teaches them this song to keep their hopes high when they need it and Napoleon does not allow them to sing it anymore. Old Major speaks that he did not want any animal on the farm to ever turn into Mr. Jones once the revolution has taken over. However, Napoleon changes Animal Farm back to Manor Farm, going back to Mr. Jones cruel ways (Orwell 96). The issue of becoming worse than Mr. Jones was something Old Major had specified. Napoleon goes against everything Old Major asks for. Likewise to Napoleon, Duvalier was accused of disappearing from Haiti and torturing/killing hundreds of innocent Haitians (Randal 1). Duvalier goes against the law and does what he wishes, not caring about the consequences. Jean-Claude, just like Napoleon, did not care for anyone besides himself and only worried about things that would benefit themselves. On the other hand, Jean-Claude never had anyone do his ‘dirty work’ for him. He did everything

This is recognized by many reasons, the most noticeable being man's lust for power and wealth which are achieved and maintained through many unjust actions. In saying tyranny, I mean any form government where the "leader" uses cruelty to maintain his illegitimately absolute power; throughout the essay this term may be used interchangeably with dictator ship. In this essay I will examine some aspects of how dictators operate in two stages of their rule. The essay will be divided into two parts: a) the dictator's rise and b) maintaining his power.…

Texts are commonly written as an expression of the attitudes or ideas within a certain time period. Furthermore, the way in which these texts are produced often reflect the social and political sensitivity at that certain time. During the mid-1930s, George Orwell like many of his literary partners became progressively more observant of the social and political concerns of the era. Orwell’s knowledge of the social sensitivity at the time allowed him to decide upon a proper medium through which he could communicate his message safely. This contrasts modern literature, represented in weddings and beheadings, in this text, the cruel nature of the topic is not euphemised, rather, the cruel nature of the topic is enhanced and strategically used by…

From this point on the reader can tell that Napoleon is going to ignore the animals' initial ideology and replace it with his own because that means that only two groups of animals were educated. Not to forget, that Napoleon isolated the dogs and educated them in a private setting to make sure that the other animals were not aware of what he was teaching the dogs. This is another technique that Napoleon used to manipulate the animals. He made sure that they trusted him when he said that he would “make himself” in charge of their education in order…

“Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.” was said by Lord Acton. The lesson Orwell intends to share with his readers is that power can lead to corruption. He does this by showing Napoleon abusing the trust of his comrades, misguiding the lesser-educated animals, and placing the blame on everyone but himself. Orwell shows power leads to corruption through Napoleon consistently abusing how much faith the animals have in him.…

Power is defined as a controlling entity that can not be escaped by those who are less superior. In George Orwell's Animal Farm, there is an evident theme shown throughout particular instances of how “power can significantly corrupt individuals” in the novel. From this political satire, Orwell’s main character Napoleon undergoes the destructive damages he creates upon this theme. Animal Farm is a short story reflecting past events that occurred during the Russian Revolution in 1917 in which a group of farm animals overthrow the farmer who had treated them poorly. An ideal society is set up where all the animals are equal with the pigs taking the highest position of leadership.…
