Animal Farm Government Rule

In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell many government rules that apply to us are broken. The first rule is term limits and voting this means the person was fairly voted into office and has a set amount of time to serve in office. Another equally important rule is Checks and Balances this rule makes sure no one person (or branch of government) gets more power than another. The last rule is the Separation of Powers this rule gives each person (or branch of government) its power and how to use it. A main character named Napoleon breaks all these rules that are applied in the United States Government such as term limits, voting, Checks and Balances, and the Separation of Powers. The pigs in the book Animal Farm gain superiority over the other animals after Old Major died because the were seen as smarter and they were compared to wise Old Major. The pigs specifically Napoleon and Snowball were not voted to be in charge the just took charge (Orwell, 2.34). This violates the voting laws because the …show more content…
The rule “no animal shall drink alcohol” (Orwell, 2.37) was changed after the pigs were caught brewing beer to “no animal shall drink alcohol to excess” (Orwell, 8.129). The money from boxers sale to the slaughter house went to whiskey for the pigs and humans to enjoy. The pigs also changed the rule “no animal shall sleep in a bed” (Orwell, 2.37) to “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets” (Orwell, 6.84) after they realized how much more comfortable the bed were. This relates to separation of powers because Napoleon doesn't fairly give jobs to each animal he give the pigs the advantage over all the other animals. The most important rule changed was “four legs good, two legs bad” (Orwell, 3.46) this commandment was changed to “two legs good, four legs better” (Orwell, 10.155) when the pigs started walking on four legs and the humans were brought back into the

Whenever the pigs or dogs break a commandment, Napoleon has Squealer the pig slightly change one of the commandments written on the end of the barn. For example, when the pigs start to drink alcohol, the fifth commandment that originally stated that “No animal shall drink alcohol” (George Orwell, 25) is changed so that it states “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess” (George Orwell, 109). In this instance and many others, Napoleon uses the other animals bad memory and the pig's ability to write to change the law so that the pigs never break it, even though they actually do. The worst part is that at the end of the book, all the commandments are erased and replaced with the sentence “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (George Orwell, 134). This means that Napoleon got rid of all the laws and made it so that the other animals cannot question his actions with factual evidence that he did anything wrong.…

In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell, pigs govern the community because of the lack in knowledge that the other animals had. The author chose to do this to show how in reality this occurs. The Russian Revolution of 1917 proved if citizens don't pay attention then a government might be corrupted from bad leaders. The animals in Animal Farm were unaware of the harsh decision because of lies excuses, and propagandas stated by their leader Napoleon, which corrupted their government.…

Aung San Suu Kyi a Burmese politician, diplomat, author, and winner of a Nobel Peace Prize said, “It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and the fear of scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.” In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, it shows how this exact quote plays out. The pigs, mostly Napoleon and Squealer, end up growing evil over time. Napoleon fears the animals will realize how he is treating them and they will rise up against him.…

Napoleons dream of becoming a leader had become a reality as he had gained full control and had become a dictator. This is proven when the novella states “they had come to a time where no animal had dared to speak their mind, when fierce growling dogs roamed everywhere,” (Pg64) Napoleons rule had become violent as the animals were too afraid to do anything after “they had to watch fellow comrades get torn to pieces.” (Pg64) Napoleons use of his dogs insures that no animals shall dare defy him destroying there once loved freedom and replacing it with torture, creating a life that was worse than living under the autocracy of the humans. It is clearly shown in this novella that the pigs are easily manipulated as they are naïve to believe the pigs want the best for them, this is shown through the use of dramatic irony. Napoleon more destroys the freedom vowed by Old Major at the start of the revolution as he forces the animals to work and live and be treated as slaves proving Napoleon to be corrupt than the humans as the animals were only working for the better interest of the pigs and for the benefit of the pigs not themselves as they thought that was what they were doing.…

Animal Farm Lord Acton says, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In the book, Animal Farm, by George Orwell this quote is thoroughly expressed and proven. When a farm is overthrown by the animals inhabiting it, to fix the corrupt rule that they’re already under, power coaxes them to into being just as corrupt, if not more. Three major examples are Farmer Jones, the pigs and dogs in general, and the head boar, Napoleon. Absolute power corrupts Animal Farm absolutely.…

Power in the world today is most commonly used in one of two different fashions, it is either embraced or abused. In George Orwell’s, Animal Farm, the many farm animals are successful in liberating themselves from their horrid owner, Mr.Jones, only to find themselves led by one of their counterparts named Napoleon. Napoleon is an intelligent pig who abuses his given power in many instances such as his hatred shown towards his comrade Snowball, changing the commandments in order to benefit himself, and making others feel inferior to himself. The expression “rules are meant to be broken” was shown to be true soon after Napoleon was put into power following the extraction of Mr. Jones from Animal Farm.…

Napoleon even takes precautionary measures to ensure that he is the only leader and eventually concludes that having power means he is superior in intellect. Napoleon further abuses his power when he no longer is able to distinguish between right and wrong. The farm shifts from a republic to a dictatorship when Napoleon seizes the animals’ freedom of speech, kills traitors, and forces the animals to work seven days a week. The pigs slowly adapt to the laws of the human world, a world they so adamantly despised.…

    1. Leadership in Animal farm is presented as a dictatorship which is proven to be cyclic. For instance “there was only one candidate, Napoleon who was elected unanimously” and “he carried a whip”. This implies that leadership is recognized to be cyclical as the animals are back where they started with dictators with ‘whips in their hands’. Yet, the only dissimilarity is that they have a different ruler.…

The main mistakes the animals kept repeating after the revolution was submitting to the pigs’ rule and dictatorship showing how submissiveness leads to consequences when not acted upon quickly enough. None of the animals took an early stand at the injustice they were receiving at the hands of Napoleon and his allies. They all brushed off any doubts they had about believing others and the massive tweaks of the seven commandments. For example, Muriel and Benjamin were able to read and they still ignored the fact that the seven commandments were different, blaming their “faulty memory”. The following quote supports: “None of the animals could form any idea as to what this meant, except old Benjamin, who nodded his muzzle with a knowing air ,…
