Animal Farm Eulogy

Mrs. Hulsey,

How could I ever thank you enough for instilling in me a love of English so deep that it resonates within my soul? It’s not just what I do, it’s who I am!

From keeping us from snickering too much about the loss of Juliet’s maidenhead to opening our eyes to a new society in “Animal Farm”, you bestowed upon us a sense of culture and credibility that will last throughout our lives, especially in that of a writer like me.

I always knew that I wanted to write, but writing isn’t just writing… it’s research and it’s creation and it’s TOUGH. I recollect my Junior and Senior year on yearbook staff and I remember tidbits like, “No more than two fonts and three colors on one page,” and it helps me in my career today.

Throughout the last seven weeks I have learned a lot as a writer through reading works written by Johnson, Dawkins, Barthelme, and King. Through analyzing their techniques and continuing to practice I have become a better fiction writer. These writers have taught me how to use concrete sensory detail to reveal emotion and tone. In addition, they taught me the importance of white space, poetic language, building tension, and creating dialogue that reveals character. While writing my midterm story, Don't Run, I worked to embed many of these elements into the piece.…

I spent more and more time emulating my grandfather as an oral historian, bombarding my mother with verbose accounts of daily adolescent life. However, as my social life suffered from a lack of interpersonal confidence, I channeled more and more of my imaginative thoughts onto paper. Rarely did I have the time to compose a fully fleshed-out story; instead, I recalled the poetic beauty of my great-grandfather’s broken English and jotted my thoughts into journals full of lilting stanzas that I shared frequently during Poetry Club at my first high school. Then, at Mission Vista High, I found even more opportunities to flaunt my virtues as an author and storyteller.…

I reached across the table, handed my book to him, and asked, “Mr. Collins, what would you say to a college junior studying literature who has no idea what he wants to do after he graduates other than write books?” Leaning back in his chair, as if the crowd of a few hundred behind me either didn’t exist, didn’t matter, or both, he said, “Don’t expect it to happen overnight. Let it move into the center of your life.” In that moment, he stepped out of his role of famed poet and into that of college professor and trusted advisor, passing on wisdom to an eager student.…

An experience one has during their childhood often shapes their personality and characteristics in the future. In her autobiographical passage One Writer’s Beginnings, Eudora Welty writes about her reading experience as a child, and how these experiences had an impact on her later career as an author. Welty makes clear her insatiable attitude towards reading through the strict rules of her local librarian, Mrs. Calloway, the influence of her mother, as well as her own thoughts and feelings. Welty reveals her strong desire to read by describing how she overcomes the obstacles Mrs. Calloway sets up.…

A yearbook of this size takes a monumental team effort. Thirty students work all year long to create an award-winning, four hundred page yearbook. When the finished yearbook arrives in May, I immediately turn to all of the spreads I’ve slaved over the past year to see them in print for the first time. As I sweep my hand across each page, everything I’ve done has paid off. All of the drafts of my spread layout, copy, questions, and captions I made to get incrementally closer to a spread worthy enough to grace the inside of our yearbook, was worth…

Even though society thinks that literature is outdated, lost in times, and unmemorable, but in actuality, if read and dissected it provides substance and truthfulness to the problematic world that we live in. “What if the teacher doesn’t like me, what if I say something wrong and he thinks I’m stupid, what if…”, I often asked myself these questions coming into 8th grade honors English which had simply struck me in the eye with a compulsion of fear. I often thought that this year would be like all years of English in my life; I struggle to find the motivation I need to write and sustain my grades, which ranged most commonly through a B+ to an A-, but this year/quarter is like no other, it’s my year to uplift my sensation of wanting to express myself through hundreds and thousands of words that pop up in my fundamental and innovative state of mind. My drastic change in perspective of the English subject had simply started with my emotional revolution, whether this year would be different or if it would be like any other English year, but everything was different this year, it was the grand opening of Mr. Royal’s comforting and soothing words of wanting us to improve to the multi-media we have drawn a bridge of connections to, for example, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes to even the stories we have read that are in the horror genre which I simply thought were impossible to find a fundamental statement from.…

Violence and Corruption of Leaders “They had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes” (Orwell 87) This is the scene for George Orwell’s Animal Farm, where pigs take over governmental rule after driving out the tyrannical Mr. Jones. Although the new government was designed from ideas of equality, corruption amongst the pigs leads to a reign of terror equal to or worse than that of Mr. Jones. Orwell’s intention in writing Animal Farm was to indirectly critique the ruling of the newly formed Soviet Union, therefore many characters in the novel are related to prominent leaders after the Russian…

I love to read and I wouldn’t be able too if it weren’t for learning the basics of writing. I remember the first time I walked into the school library at South Forrest Attendance Center. It was very quiet so quiet that you could hear a pinsel drop in the hallway, which reminded me of church like the library was a sacred place you had to respect. The librarian's name was Mrs.Smith, she seemed nice but I knew if I ever lost a book I would be in deep trouble.…

Writing had always been one of my difficult challenges, but the desire inside of me learning new things always push me to accept the challenges. In fact, learning a new language stays always challenging to every person. However, English 111 class has taught me many things that I never thought I will do it. The first assignment that we did a reading response to Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Draft” has taught me that people learn from their mistakes, and nobody is perfect.…
