Equal… Well Not Quite

“All animals are equal but some are more equal than others”. The novel Animal Farm, George Orwell: is about a farm named Manor Farm which was changed to Animal Farm; the animals at this farm believe in equality and a few other rules. Then some of the animals began to believe that they were more important than others. This leads to the animal farm falling down into pieces. The theme of the story is rivalry. I think that this novel is still relevant to readers today, not only is it a good book to connect to the Russian Revolutionary war but it a good book to read in general.

The plot of the story is based around the seven commandments of Animal Farm which change throughout the book; the rules change based off of what happens to the

The pigs are the ones that break the commandments. One of the commandments that get broken by the pigs is the fourth commandment. The commandment originally says “no animal shall sleep in a bed” then it gets changed to “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”. This happens because the pigs start to sleep in the bed but they can't do that without changing the commandment. Another commandment that gets broken is the fifth commandment. The commandment says “no animal shall drink alcohol”. Then, later gets changed to “no animal shall drink alcohol to an excess”. The pigs drink alcohol and don't want to get in trouble for breaking the commandments so they decide to change it to benefit them.

Animal farm is a great book to read, this is a relevant novel because it connects to many wars that have happened over the year. The Russian or soviet Union took place in 1917 through 1991 and the french revolution took place in 1789 through 1799. Important people that were in these wars were, slaves which was most of the population and the French had Napoleon; Napoleon is a character in this novel. The Russian/Soviet Union had 293 million people and the French had 20 million

To Conform or Not to Conform? Conformity is a life that only leads to unhappiness and a voice that will not be heard. The sheep from Animal Farm chooses to conform through their slogans, while Christopher choose to continue writing a book he was told to discontinue. The sheep unknowingly followed everything the pigs told them to do while Christopher knowingly disobeyed his father. Conformity gives the person a choice to use their voice or be silenced, though both will cause a negative outcome.…

I can support this inference with multiple text details. First of all the pigs force the other animals to work for them, while they themselves do nothing. The pigs also lie to the other animals at almost all times, only to benefit themselves. They live like kings, while the other animals barely survive in stalls with minimal amounts of food. At the end of the book the pigs craft the ultimate rule “ All animals are equal but some animals are MORE equal”…

Animal Farm is an allegory as it has parallels to the Soviet Union and the possibility of totalitarianism. The phrase in the book "All animals are equal but some are more equal than others" is a good satire on the facade of equality that communism in Russia at the time had. The pigs were the communist idealist, some of them being representatative of ones present in Soviet Russia, and they had a plan to overthrow the farmer, Mr. Jones, who is like the old tzars of Russia. The farm goes from a monarchy, to communist government, to a totalitarian government, resulting in Napoleon, the head pig, having complete control over everything in the farm. In the end, the communist idealist pigs turn into just what they had overthrown, and the rest of the animals could no longer tell them apart from the humans.…

Throughout the book the pigs became used their smarts to manipulate the others to get to the top. This was greatly expressed through the eyes of two major characters, Snowball and Napolean. When Old Major dies, the pigs, seized power as nobles in comparison, and placed every animal on the farm into unfair social classes. Also in the book they follow they’re social class orders according to the Seven Commandments written by Snowball. This was their set of laws that were forced upon the animals of the farm.…

The first passage is at page 84-85. It is when Benjamin and Clover go to the barn to read the seven commandments, but when they got to the barn it had no longer had the seven commandments because the pigs have been changing it, but know one has noticed because most of them could not even read. But now it reads “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others page 85”. I think that when the animals started to read it, that was the moment that they finally started to realize that the pigs might not be the good animals they thought they were. I also think this shows how much the pigs really manipulated the other animals.…

The original seven Commandments were: 1.“Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy” 2.“Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.” 3.“No animal shall wear clothes” 4.“No animal shall sleep in a bed” 5.“No animal shall drink alcohol” 6.”No animal shall kill any other animal” 7.“All animals are equal” (Orwell, 25). The Commandments went through several additions to accommodate the pigs’ behavior, and they eventually became one Commandment “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (Orwell, 134). After Old Major died, two pigs, Napoleon and Snowball (who represents Leo Trotsky) took over leadership of the farm. Napoleon was the stronger of the two, and over time he became the sole leader.…

“At the foot of the end wall of the big barn, where the Seven Commandments were written, there lay a ladder broken in two pieces. Squealer, temporarily stunned, was sprawling beside it, and near at the hand there lay a lantern, a paintbrush and an overturned pot of white paint” (Orwell 73). This is to make the pigs seem like they are still abiding by the commandments, when in reality they are exploiting the commandments to suit themselves. They no longer care about Animalism as they cease to benefit from this philosophy. The pigs, who have become the leaders due to their manifest intelligence, have become what they resented from the start.…
