Animal Farm is an allegorical (a metaphor based on a character, place, or event) novel by George Orwell. The book’s events relate to the Russian Revolution of 1917. The book starts of with old Major, an old boar and an allegory of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin, calling a meeting about a dream he had on Manor Farm. He tells the animals that they must create a rebellion against humans, he called them “enemies,” and then he recalls his dream. The dream was about a song he used to hear amongst the other animals when he was young called Beasts of England. Then, all the animals begin to sing it loudly. Three nights later old Major dies. The rebellion plans carry on with two young pigs named Napoleon and Snowball, who are playing Joseph Stalin and …show more content…
Later on, Jones and his men try to recapture Animal Farm. In the battle, Snowball, who has been studying the combat of Julius Caesar has all the animals retreat. Then, they ambush them, the battle is called “The Battle of Cowshed.”

Snowball and Napoleon are fighting for leadership over each other. Snowball has plans to make a windmill to have electricity and warm the barn. The animals work hard to make the windmill. The animals awake in the morning after a rough storm to find that the windmill has collapsed. Napoleon and Squealer, a young pig, say that Snowball did it, and uses him as a scapegoat. Napoleon and his dogs kill animals he thinks are in cahoots with Snowball, the first to be executed are four pigs who disagreed with Napoleon’s actions, their execution symbolized the Great Purge of Grigory Zinoviev, Lev Kamenev, Nikolai Bukharin, and Alexei Rykov. Beasts of England is replace with an anthem praising Napoleon. Napoleon himself appears to be adopting the lifestyle of a man. One of the neighboring farmers, Mr. Frederick, attacks the farm, using blasting powder to collapse the windmill. Even though the animals won the battle, which was named “The Battle of the Windmill,” many animals died and were hurt including Boxer the workhorse. When he was working one night, he collapsed. Napoleon said they would send him to the veterinarian on one of the neighboring farms. When the cart came to bring him away, it said a knacker (in England in the 1940’s, farms would send animals to a knacker to be killed and boiled into animal glue for money) company on the side.
